Variety reported that Open Road Films has bought the U.S. distribution rights to the film “Life on the Road.” The movie is from Ricky Gervais’ British TV series, and is a spin-off documentary about David Brent.
It is reported that “The Office” TV series aired two six-episode seasons in the years 2001 and 2002, and two Christmas specials in the year 2003.
Ricky Gervais will be the director, writer and starring of “Life on the Road.” “David Brent getting a big U.S. theatrical release?” and “he can die happy now,” said Gervais, reported SBS. The source added that the film would focus on Gervais’ David Brent character in “The Office.”
According to VF Hollywood, it is quite exciting and appealing that Ricky Gervais is unlocking another chapter in David Brent’s life when fans admired the 14-episode “The Office.”
In 2010, when asked about the reason why he stopped the British TV series with just 14 episodes, Ricky answered, “That was always the plan. It was easier to walk away from because we thought it turned out exactly as we wanted it. Why ruin it?”
“Life on the Road” will open in the U.K. on August 19, 2016, said eOne Features, which handles worldwide film rights. Soon after that, Open Road Films is planning for an extensive theatrical release of the film in the U.S.
Tom Ortenberg, CEO of Open Road Films said, “Ricky Gervais is a comic genius and we can’t wait to see where he takes this beloved character.”
Fans of “The Office” TV series and Ricky Gervais as well as those who are excited to watch the director’s Office spin-off movie “Life on the Road,” wait until it is released in 2016.
