The first look at Risk, the documentary based on Wikileaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange, has finally come out. It is a geopolitical thriller which is told from the perspective of the filmmaker.
The highly anticipated docudrama is much-awaited by fans. It is going to address the issues of the Afghanistan war, US presidential Election, Russian involvement in the elections, and political scandals.
All About Risk
Risk is directed by Laura Poitras who received critical acclaim for her documentary Citizenfour which was based on Edward Snowden. It is said that she was given exceptional way to contact Assange for the upcoming documentary. The film will go back to 2016 and several important events related to that year. (Via Slash Film)
It has been filmed over a period of six years which includes events back in 2016 until now. The audience will be able to see the people surrounding Assange and understand how it all works. It goes on to explain the impact of global politics and scandalous leaks on social media. It is framed within control, principals, sacrifice, and unfaithfulness involved in the events.
The trailer of the documentary unveils Assange as a controversial figure. Julian Assange & Wikileaks
Assange began hacking at a tender age and but he was later caught by Australian Federal Police. He began his degree at the University of Melbourne but did not complete it.In 2006 he established Wikileaks, a non-profit organization that publishes secret and confidential information. This group gained international prominence by 2010 by releasing Collateral Murder video which featured killing of Iraqi journalists in an air strike.

He is currently exiled and is staying at the Ecuadorian embassy in London under diplomatic asylum. He is facing several charges and he might face a death sentence if he goes back to the United States. Assange was also charged with a sexual assault allegation in 2010 when he was in Sweden though there is no mention of these events in the documentary.
Other Movies Based on Julian Assange
So far, two films have been made on Assange’s life and career. The first one is Underground which is an adaptation of the 1997 book of Suelette Dreyfus. However, it was never acknowledged by Assange and neither was it confirmed that it had any direct reference to his life.
The second one is the Bill Condon thriller directorial, The Fifth Estate. It starred Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of editor in chief of Wikileaks.
The film revolves around the foundation and establishment of the organization and its initial exposures. It was praised for its execution and particularly for the performance of Cumberbatch in the lead role. Assange appreciated the efforts and he was in contact with Cumberbatch via mail during the making of the film.
On the contrary, the film did not gain commercial success and it grossed only $8.6 million against the production budget of $28 million.
No release date has been announced for the premiere of Risk as of now. But, it will be coming out later in this year’s summer on Showtime. Additionally, the network had teamed up with Neon for the theatrical run. It has already premiered in Cannes last year but there were some more additions later done in the documentary by Poitras.
