Rockers take on Pop Stars all the time and the hard core rock enthusiasts love them for it. The most recent spat to take the field was the Noel Gallagher versus the pop princes from One Direction. Gallagher had famously said something nasty about the boys that left Liam Payne whimpering, “but we are your fans!”
Well here’s the truth about Rock. It takes the contrarian’s stand. It doesn’t support the mainstream opinion; it doesn’t talk about love, sex, cars, money or anything that the popular mindset craves. It is always avant-garde. It thrives on the venom that is sent its way for being so… different. So a rocker like Gallagher taking on One Direction isn’t something strange or unthinkable. It is practically expected of them.
The readers might be asking at this point, “But what did Gallagher say?” He said, verbatim, “Does anybody give a f— about what any of these current pop stars are up to? Who gives a shit what f—ing One Direction do? Cocksuckers, all of them in rehab by the time they’re 30.” He was talking to the Esquire magazine. Well, we can’t really say if Noel was serious or joking about the whole rehab thing. He’s been through the rough too. He was in a lot of trouble when he was younger.
At any rate the chance remark hurt One Direction. Their singer, Liam Payne, reacted with the “How could you? We are your fans!” type of reply. Billboard reports that Liam Payne told BBC Radio 1, “It’s sad because [the Oasis] genuinely led me to a path of singing. That’s something they should be genuinely proud of.” Then he whimpered, “They don’t think before they speak. You never know who was a fan of your music, especially when you were as big as they were. Do it with grace. Good old Noel, bless him.”
Well, those of us who regularly read about rockers know that this type of criticism is part of the act. It is practically de rigueur in the rock circles. So relax! It’s just strange people being strange. It’s nothing out of the ordinary.
