In December 2012, Australian radio DJ Mel Greig and 2DayFM co-host Michael Christian pretended to be the Queen and Prince Charles. They made a prank call to the King Edward VII Hospital in London where a pregnant Kate Middleton was being treated for acute morning sickness. A nurse revealed details of Kate’s health condition that served as scoop. Read on for Australian DJ Mel Greig’s interview to learn more about how nurse Jacintha Saldanha committed suicide.
A nurse revealed details of Kate’s health condition and that has made headlines around the world. Australian DJ Mel Greig in an interview with Sunday Night guest reporter Mel Doyle on Australia’s Channel 7 network, has admitted she “should have tried harder” to stop the call from going on air.
Greig revealed that she and her family had received death threats after the prank. Greig was being blamed to be one of the causes of the death of nurse Jacintha Saldanha. She said she felt she had been living a “stranger’s life” since then.
According to Mirror, Greig said that she insisted to the senior managers of their radio station to change the recording. She wanted 2DayFM staff members’ voices to be used in place of the nurses so they would not face any embarrassment. Her suggestion was neglected and the call was aired unaltered leading to a fiasco. Three days after the call went to air, Jacintha Saldanha, who had transferred the call to Kate Middleton’s ward was found hanged in the hospital nurses’ accommodation.
“When this first happened, I absolutely blamed myself, 100 per cent. I felt like I’d failed as a human being, to make someone feel that way, enough to take their own life. I’m slowly learning that’s it not all my fault but it’s going to take me time to get to that point,” said Greig in the Mirror report.
The said interview was reportedly filmed last September 2013, but only went to air on Sunday, June 1, 2014. An investigation into the suicide of Ms. Saldanha was delayed last September 2013. A date for the hearing has not been fixed according to a spokesman for Westminster Council, which deals with media inquiries for Westminster Coroner’s Court where the investigation was first opened.
