With Marvel Studios getting the rights back to the ‘Punisher’ franchise this May, many fans hoped that the next movie announced would perhaps be a better adaptation of the comics-based vigilante. Things though are looking glum with no announcements whatsoever about an impending Punisher movie in the coming years.
However, ScreenCrush has uncovered over the weekend what could be a Punisher Easter egg in Iron Man 3. Depending on your perception, this could be all a big misunderstanding or perhaps a tease for things to come.
The still image (source) is from inside the Mandarin’s lair and looks to be the same skull emblem which the Punisher uses. However, not all is what it seems to be. It’s actually a painting called “Bask” created by Czech artist Ales Bask Hostomsky. Hostomsky is a self-described “mixed-media urban visual artist” and was hired by ‘Iron Man 3′ director Shane Black to work in the art department, creating some propaganda posters for the Mandarin character. Hence, any resemblance to the Punisher skull is purely coincidental.
When Marvel retained the movie rights to the franchise earlier this year, they made it clear that fans shouldn’t expect anything soon. “I think we need to find the right time,” said Marvel head Kevin Feige.
Right now the probability of getting a Punisher TV show is more than that of a Hollywood blockbuster film. It’s safe to say that we won’t see Frank Castle on the big screen in the next couple of years at least, maybe even more.
