Earlier this week Simon Cowell completed his search for the new judges on next seasons The X Factor. However his search for a judge for the upcoming season of American Idol might just be starting, if any of the myriad of rumors is true that Jennifer Lopez the show’s second-year judge is looking to move on. Lopez has a contract for one year at $20 million and it is up at season’s end. As of yet, she still has not signed a contract for another season.
Lopez is touring Latin America and the U.S. with Enrique Iglesias this summer and reports have said she would complete a world tour following that. In addition, she wants to be able to spend additional time with her twins.
Of course, all this could be her way of negotiating a new deal with the show. It is much preferable for the show if the contracts for next season are signed and sealed before the upfront presentation that was this past Monday. Lopez waited until August last year to re-sign her contract with the show. The executives apparently wanted her to sign a multi-year deal, like Steven Tyler her fellow judge did. However, she only signed for a single season and was able to bump the amount from $12 million to the current $20 million.
The executive producer of Idol, Nigel Lithgoe said the show wants her to return. We all want her back, but it is what it is and she much weigh everything. He said he was aware of many offers for movies and other projects that she was reviewing.
