“Salem” Season 1 Episode 12 “Ashes, Ashes” airs on Sunday, July 6, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on WGN America. WARNING! Spoilers ahead! Read only if you want to know more about Movie News Guide’s (MNG) “Salem” Episode 12 “Ashes, Ashes” spoilers and a quick recap of Episode 11 “Cat and Mouse.”

“Salem” Season 1 Episode 11 “Cat and Mouse” aired on June 29, 2014. It was directed by Tricia Brock and written by Jon Harmon Feldman. Previously on “House of Pain” (air date: June 22, 2014), John Alden (Shane West) has been accused of being a witch. Tituba (Ashley Madekwe) has given his name to Increase (Stephen Lang) when the latter asked her about her “lover.”

The latest “Salem” episode began with the aftermath of John’s imprisonment. Mary (Janet Montgomery) tried to talk sense to Increase about John. Increase agreed that they must ask the Selectmen to vote whether he was innocent or not. During the trial, Increase blindsided May again by asking George Sibley (Michael Mulheren) to participate in the election. George, who currently cannot speak, spit on John’s shoe as a  “yes.”

Elsewhere, Anne (Tamzin Merchant) confronted Magistrate Hale (Xander Berkley) about the weird human teleporting mask she used before. Hale refused to answer and Anne went to pump information from the Mathers. Anne first talked with Increase about the witches while Cotton (Seth Gabel) tried to kiss her. In the end, Hale confessed about his true identity as a witch. He told her how the people burned his parents and the coven members took him under their wings. Anne tried to flee at first until Hale shared that the mask can be only used by a witch.

On the other hand, Mary wanted to help John escape from his prison cell. She told him that she will do everything, but John refused. Little did he know, Mary had tapped Mercy (Elise Eberl) to help her kill Increase. Mary drugged Isaac to use him for her plans.

A spellbounded Isaac came to Increase to tell him that they must follow Mercy. Increase almost lost when he sliced through Mercy’s stomach. He did this successfully, but Mercy also got to Isaac with her weapon. The episode ended with Mary receiving one of the Mathers in her home. At first, she thought that it was just Cotton. But to her surprise, it was Increase!
