There is no stopping Sam Smith’s rise. After earning several Grammy and Brit Awards in February, the singer has done what only few newcomers can: deny the great Madonna her chance of getting a career highlight of twelve number one albums. He wins. She lost. The two battled it out at the U.K. charts recently. Read on to learn more about it.

The Material Girl’s newest album “Rebel Heart” was coasting and leading the charts in the last couple of weeks when Sam Smith’s “In The Lonely Hour” album. It has been steady at the rankings for a while, once again, overtook the top post. According to Official Charts, Smith’s album apparently received a boost when he performed “Lay Me Down.” It is the latest single, along with John Legend at the Comic Relief Show last Friday, Mar. 13, 2015.

Beating Madonna by only 12,000 sales, Smith also managed to create a new milestone for any other male solo artist. “In The Lonely Hour” has now topped the charts six times, second only to “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel, which became number one eight times.

Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran came out third with the album “X,” followed by High Flying Birds’ “Chasing Yesterday” album. Closing the fifth spot is George Ezra’s “Wanted on Voyage.”

Smith’s “Lay Me Down” also emerged as the number one song in the U.K. singles chart, making this the artist’s fourth number one single after only two years in the industry. His previous hits include “Stay With Me,” which he also collaborated with John Legend, as well as “Money On My Mind” and “La la la,” which he collaborated with Naughty Boy. These songs are all part of the “In The Lonely Hour” album, which garnered raves from critics.

Madonna’s “Rebel Heart” marks her thirteenth studio album release and was done in collaboration with artists like Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, and Alicia Keys. It was officially released on Mar. 6, 2015 as a dance album and was met with much success. Reviews have touted this latest endeavor by the Queen of Pop as her best effort in a long while.
