Sam Worthington and Lara Bingle face a legal battle and a fine of $10 million. What brought about this dilemma for the couple? Read more below.
A New York paparazzo has brought about a $10 Million fine to both Sam Worthington and Lara Bingle for a lawsuit he filed against the two. The lawsuit was for the serious damages done to Sheng Li, a paparazzo who was allegedly assaulted by the couple in February 2014. According to Li’s lawyer, the couple could face a very public spectacle if they fail to settle the fine brought against them.
In response to this, the legal teams for the couple are said to have scheduled a meeting with Li before they face a judge in Manhattan. The meeting, set for Wednesday, is for a settlement conference regarding the lawsuit.
For Li’s lawyer, Mark Heller, a video footage of the assault would be considered “damning” once a trial would be proceeded.
“If Mr. Worthington and Ms. Bingle were smart, they’d settle it because otherwise this case will become a real spectacle,” Heller told AAP. “If you saw what went viral, it is not very pretty.”
According to Heller, the video shows the couple beating up a defenseless photographer who was “very seriously injured.” Stating how society no longer tolerates the abusive conduct performed by celebrities, Heller believes that the viral video would be a huge issue for the couple. Since there are already a number of people who lost their jobs after videos of them assaulting other people have been exposed, this would be a problem for Worthington.
Last Dec. 12, 2014, the photographer underwent surgery so the torn tendons from his rotator cuff could be repaired. The lawyer shares that these were serious damages caused by the couple. Currently, Li is having a difficulty in the limited range of dexterity and movement from the damage.
Other than the physical damage, Li has also been psychologically affected from the experience. His lawyer shares that Li is “very fearful to go out” with this kind of environment where celebrities can get very abusive.
Meanwhile, the couple are defending the claim of Li against them. According to their lawyers, the photographer put himself “voluntarily” into the situation. The damages he sustained were brought about by his culpable conduct towards the celebrities while he was taking photos of Bingle on the street.
