According to reports, "Avengers" star Scarlet Johansson has been offered to play lead role for a live-action adaptation of “Ghost in the Shell.” Read on for further details.
Earlier, we have reported that “Wolf of the Wall Street” star Margot Robbie was in early negotiations for the lead role for the live-action adaptation of the Japanese hit manga, “Ghost in the Shell,” but it seems negotiations have failed with the actress being tied up with Warner Bros.' recently announced adaptation of DC’s “Suicide Squad.” She is reported to star alongside Will Smith and Tom Hardy.
Deadline reports that Scarlet Johansson has been offered $10 million to take up the lead role for the said pic. With her successful roles as Marvel’s Black Widow and the sci-fi action pic, “Lucy,” Johansson’s worth boosted significantly, being sought-after for lead action roles at this moment. Moreover, rumor has it that Johansson will have a very small role in "Captain America 3," as opposed to her very significant role in “The Winter Soldier.”
Set in the mid-21st century Japan, “Ghost in the Shell” tells the story of the fictional counter-cyberterrorist organization, Public Security Section 9, a special operations task force made up of former military officers and police detectives led by Major Motoko Kusanagi, specializing in fighting various technology-related crimes. In the post-cyberpunk imagining of the future, computer technology has advanced to the point that many members of the public possess “cyberbrains” — a technology that allows a person to interface their biological brain with various networks. This high level of “cyberization,” however, opens the brain up to attacks from highly skilled hackers. As such, it is up to Public Security Section 9 to prevent the most dangerous beings from hacking a person to bend to their whims.
The manga has been adapted into several different anime adaptations starting with the 1995 film of the same name and television series “Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex” in 2002. By 2013, “Ghost in the Shell: Arise” film series was released with its first two episodes. The third episode of the four-part series was set to be released on June 28, 2014.
DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to produce the adaptation “Ghost in a Shell” by 2008. Avi Arad, Mark Sourian and Steven Paul will produce, with Bill Wheeler penning the screenplay. As mentioned earlier, Sanders, whose first feature film is “Snow White and the Huntsman,” will be directing.
