The unconventional dystopian British drama series “Black Mirror” returns this December with a special one-off feature that stars Hollywood actor Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”). Created by Charlie Brooker, the show airs on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and will subsequently air on Direct TV in the United States. In line with this, Channel 4 has released the teaser for its Christmas special. Read on for more about this update.
The "Black Mirror" special, “Black Mirror: White Christmas,” follows an anthology format that showcases three different stories in its 90-minute offering. The show feature Hamm alongside Rafe Spall (“The Shadow Line”) and Oona Chaplin (“Game of Thrones”) and will deal with the fascinating story of how the dark side of technology can affect people in a dystopian world. The series has been described as similar to “Twilight Zone,” but with digital technology coming into play.
In the teaser released by Channel 4, Hamm is shown in three different storylines. He plays an American named Matt, who engages Potter (Spall) in a Christmas meal where they share tales of creepy Christmases. Matt is next seen helping out a man in trying to win a woman's heart. He also guides a woman (Chaplin) into navigating what looks like a futuristic environment. There’s also a scene where viewers see how blocking a person in real life happens, as one does on social media sites.
The series first premiered in 2011 to a strong response and has since delivered six episodes in its two season run. The Christmas special is touted as part of its third season.
"If technology is a drug – and it does feel like a drug – then what, precisely, are the side-effects? This area – between delight and discomfort – is where Black Mirror, my new drama series, is set. The 'black mirror' of the title is the one you'll find on every wall, on every desk, in the palm of every hand: the cold, shiny screen of a TV, a monitor, a smartphone," said Brooker in an interview with The Guardin, when trying to explain the concept of the show.
