Artist David LaChapelle directed the music video, which shows Sergei Polunin dancing to “Take Me to Church” with Jade Hale-Christofi’s choreography. The video shared on LaChapelle’s YouTube channel got more than two million views after being uploaded on Feb. 9, 2015. Why is it popular? Well, just add up everything at its best — LaChapelle’s cinematography, Hale-Christofi’s choreography, Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” charisma and Polunin’s passionate performance.
Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” has been noted for its strong message and has been an anthem for LGBT community according to The Guardian. Now with another strong message, Polunin, a former British Royal Ballet vet, has portrayed another battle, fighting your own demons, which the dancer may have related to his life and career. HuffPost noted that Poluni’s dance moves were dark and exudes a kind of spiritual possession, while Refinery29 called the performance “gravity-defying.”
