“Sherlock” Season 4 will return to BBC in 2016. Don’t let the two years gap dampen you! Why? Because a special Christmas episode plus three new episodes are coming! How great is that? Read on to learn more about “Sherlock’s” Christmas special and three new episodes.
“Sherlock” is a critically acclaimed crime drama series created by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat from BBC. It is based on Arthur Conan Doyle’s classical novels that featured Sherlock Holmes and his adventures as a detective. Since its premiere in 2010, the series has skyrocketed the careers of both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, who then starred in several Hollywood movies.
Series co-creator, executive producer ad writer Mark Gatiss confirmed to Mirror that there would be a special episode, which will premiere during Christmas in 2015. Gatiss’ announcement was made after “The Hobbit” star Martin Freeman hinted on the issue.
“Series Four! At last ! It’s always special to return to Sherlock but this time it’s even more special as we’re doing… a Special,” said Gatiss in the Mirror report.
“Not only THAT, we’ll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on – again!” added Gatiss.
Moreover, the internet world got wild over the epic news after BBC One announced the news over Twitter on July 2, 2014. The official Twitter account of BBC One tweeted a photo of a not-so-dead Jim Moriaty, who is portrayed by Andrew Scott. It was accompanied with the hastag #221Back.

And that’s not the only thing that we’ve got in store for “Sherlock” fans. Movie News Guide (MNG) previously reported that Gatiis confirmed to Mirror that Season 4 will premiere on 2016. According to Mirror, it will follow the series’ traditional lengthy hiatus between each season. Gatiss also pointed out that everyone wanted to reduce the time on the production.
“Writing three films is quite a lot of work and then getting everyone together… [it’s] increasingly difficult to get everyone’s diaries to align, so we couldn’t really do more than three every couple of years I’m afraid,” said Gatiss in the Mirror article.
The said hiatus was due to the current busy schedules of creators and its cast members. Moffat continued his work as the head writer of BBC’s “Doctor Who,” while Gatiss has gotten himself a role as Tycho Nestoris in “Game of Thrones.” Cumberbatch and Freeman got their own conflicting schedules, filming several movies in which they starred in the 2012 film “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.”
Despite the hiatus, Radio Times reported that Moffat and Gatiss have already worked on both Season 4 and Season 5. It was after they went out of the production bus that they had plotted “some of the best ideas they ever had.”
“So we have got plans – but our plans don’t tend to be ‘Let’s blow up the world or cast the most famous person in the world’ they tend to be ‘What exciting twists and turns can we add to this?’ And I think we’ve got some crackers!” said Moffat in the Radio Times article.
