Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Shohreh Aghdashloo (“House of Saddam”) has been cast in Syfy’s space opera “The Expanse.” along with Steven Strait (“Magic City”). Read on to learn the latest casting development for this upcoming TV drama.

As released in the press by Syfy, Shohreh Aghdashloo will be playing the role of Chrisjen Avasarala in the 10-episode science fiction series “The Expanse.” Her character is described as a passionate and intelligent woman born into a political family. Chrisjen is part of the governing body that rules the Earth and she got her post without ever going through an election. Aghdashloo has appeared on the “24” and has recently finished the film “The Last Knights” with Clive Owen and Morgan Freeman, and “September in Shiraz” with Adrien Brody and Selma Hayek.

Meanwhile, Steven Strait will play the role of Holden, described as a natural leader. He is an officer on board the Canterbury, a freighter plying Earth’s space. Holden will rise up to the challenge when he becomes involved in a dangerous situation in the story, playing sidekick to the lead character. Strait has been part of movies like “10,000 BC” and “City Island.”

“We knew this material would attract high end talent. Steven Strait embodies the humor, gravitas and humanity that the character of James Holden possesses. Having him alongside Thomas Jane as our leading men is thrilling. The incomparable Shohreh Aghdashloo is our dream Chrisjen Avasarala,” said Sharon Hall, the president of Alcon TV as published in Variety.

“The Expanse” is being produced by Alcon Television Group for Syfy. Earlier, the project has already enlisted Thomas Jane (“The Punisher”) to lead the series as Detective Miller.

The show, which is also partly a thriller, is set in the future and sets off a series of events when Miller (Jane), along with Holden (Straight), have to find and solve the case of a missing woman. Their search will bring them to different parts of the solar system where they will eventually uncover what is called as “the greatest conspiracy in human history.”

The first two episodes will be directed by Terry McDonough (“Breaking Bad”) with Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby as series writers.

“The Expanse” is based on a New York Times best-selling book series that was written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck using the pen name James S. A. Corey. The two also serve as producers of the series.

And that’s the latest from “The Expanse,” which will be airing on Syfy in 2015. For more about this show, keep coming back to Movie News Guide (MNG).
