Old people would always say that movie stars aren’t as good as they used to be. While there are great actors from this generation, the new stars are incomparable with the stars of the silent movie era. Some of them are featured in the San Francisco Silent Film Festival that starts on Friday.
Some of the silent movie stars to be featured in the festival are Douglas Fairbanks, Clara Bow, Buster Keaton, Louise Brooks, Emil Jannings, Pola Negri and Felix and Cat. They were at their peak 80 years ago and there are several reasons why you should go watch their movies.
Louise Brooks’ Pandora’s Box will be shown in the San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Her career lasted 13 years and it ended when she was 32 years old. Magazines have been obsessed with her private life. During her time, there’s no internet and people can’t know all her activities unlike the superstars of today.
The exploits of today’s superstars are incomparable to that of silent movie idols. Florence Lawrence was America’s first film star and the nation’s most famous woman a century ago. She worked on automobiles during her spare time and invented an indicator switch. It’s sad that she’s not famous anymore at present. She didn’t fill a patent for her invention and her salary was not that high. She died in poverty and took her own life by drinking ant paste.
One of the biggest stars of the silent film era was her protégé Mary Pickford. She was the most powerful woman in Hollywood during that time. She co-founded the United Artists studio and was considered as the queen of Hollywood. Her husband and business partner Douglas Fairbanks was the king. She was also the first of many Hollywood stars who became vegetarian. She was famous for playing children in movies due to her height.
