Simon Cowell did not react kindly to Zayn Malik’s remarks about One Direction not having much creative control over their music. He called Zayn Malik’s remarks “rude” and expressed the wish that he would change his opinion with time.
Zayn Malik had expressed the opinion that he wasn’t 100% behind the music that he produced when he was with the band, One Direction. He said that there was a creative restraint on the singers of the band. The Rolling Stone reports that Malik said that if he sang a hook or verse with an R&B tinge, he would be asked to re-record it “until there was a straight version that was pop, generic as fuck, so they could use that version.”
This perturbed Zayn so much, he decided to quit. He declared that as much as he loved being a part of the band and everything that they did together did, their music was not the kind of music that he wanted to listen to. Malik told the press, “I want to make music that I think is cool shit.”
The man behind the act, Simon Cowell, obviously found the comment in poor taste. “It is a bit rude to the people who wrote all the hits with them. And to the other band members. I mean, they all wrote a lot of the stuff,” he told HollywoodLife.com. He said that once Malik had a chance to reflect on the whole situation, Malik would reconsider his remarks. “It was a very, very democratic process,” Simon Cowell told the press.
Cowell had been very kind to Zayn all through his transition from the “X Factor” hero to his solo career. He had even helped him with a label when he had decided to go solo. But Cowell confessed to being loyal to One Direction more than he was to Zayn’s act. He told the press, “to be honest, I don’t even think about it too much because as soon as he left, we sorted him out with a label who really were enthusiastic about him and then my loyalty was back with the boys.”
