Sir Ian McKellen (“The Lord of the Rings”) gave his Twitter and Instagram followers a glimpse of the character he is currently filming for the upcoming movie that is scheduled for release in 2015. Read further to learn more about this story.

On his social media account, Sir Ian McKellen teased a photo of him as the 93-year-old Sherlock Holmes, which was taken during the screen test and pre-production phase of the movie “Mr. Holmes.”  Along with the photo, he wrote the caption: “Over 70 actors have previously played Sherlock Holmes. Now he’s 93 years old and it’s my turn. #MrHolmes”

Set in 1947, the story of “Mr. Holmes” features the character who is now long retired from doing detective work. No longer without his sidekick, Dr. Watson, he’s now living in a farmhouse together with Mrs. Munro and Roger, her young son, who looks up to Mr. Holmes as a father figure. He spends the day tending to his bees and writing on his journal. Once known for his razor-sharp mind, Mr. Holmes is apparently struggling with the effects of aging, as he experiences memory lapses.

The movie is based on the novel written by Mitch Cullin entitled “A Slight Trick of the Mind,” which is a reimagination of the iconic fictional detective in his old age. The story puts focus on different stories in Holmes life in Sussex, Japan and London. The book was released in 2005.

Aside from McKellen, also picked to join the movie early were Laura Linney (“The Big C”) as Mrs. Munro, his housekeeper, and Hiroyuki Sanada (“The Wolverine”) playing the plant enthusiast Umezaki, as reported by Deadline.

The rest of the cast, as reported by Variety, includes Hattie Morahan (“The Golden Compass”), Patrick Kennedy (“War Horse”), Roger Allam (“The Book Thief”), Phil Davis (“Notes on a Scandal”), Frances de la Tour (“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) and Milo Parker (“Ghosthunters: On Icy Trails”).

Bill Condon, who has worked with McKellen in the movie “Gods and Monsters” in 1998, is directing the film. He’s also helping with the screenplay along with Jeffrey Hatcher.

“Mr. Holmes” has no theater date yet, but it is set for release in 2015.
