“Stitchers” Season 1 Episode 5 “Stitcher in the Rye” aired on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at 9:00 p.m. on ABC Family. In this episode, after a dead conspiracy theorist turns up dead with a copy of the Stitchers program algorithm, several secrets are revealed, and dark secrets are almost brushed upon, as Kirsten Clark (Emma Ishta) began to suspect everyone within the program. Read on to learn more about this episode.
During breakfast, out of habit, Camille Engelson (Allison Scagliotti) opened up Kirsten Clark’s (Emma Ishta) package on the counter from someone that Kirsten didn’t know, which contained a copy of “Catcher in the Rye.”
At the Stitchers laboratory, the group was informed that they would be stitching into the mind of an ex-CIA food truck owner and conspiracy theorist and blogger named Justin Link (Jake Olson). His sources were quite accurate, and he had died of a heart attack before he could post a new classified document he had obtained.
Inside the stitch, Kirsten ran into several snags. The blog was interfering with the memory. She got hit by several images- someone with a butterfly tattoo handing an envelope, a hooded man in a wheelchair, a broken watch and someone in a hospital bed hugging a teddy bear- at the same time. After getting anchored by repeating a phrase, she discovered that Justin kept everything in a secret pop-up drawer. She then managed it to open when she, Cameron Goodkin (Kyle Harris) and Detective Quincy Fisher (Damon Dayoub) went inside the food truck. Just after they got the file they needed, which contained an ancient floppy disk, the truck blew up.
Back at the laboratory, after Linus Ahluwalia (Ritesh Rajan) and Camille went off to figure out a device to read the gigantic floppy disk in the envelope. Kirsten told Cameron that she kept on seeing the same teddy bear being held by someone in a hospital bed in two of the stitches that she had gone through. As she didn’t remember anything before she was left with Ed Clark (Hugo Armstrong), Cameron posted that the program might be jogging those memories which she thought were lost. However, she didn’t mention the fact that she had been getting some strange cryptic messages from an unknown sender.
After remembering that Ed had several pre-Internet computers in his possession, Kirsten used it to open up the disk and discovered that the algorithm for the Stitchers program was on it. This caused her to barge into Cameron’s loft and question him. He hacked into Linus’ network in order to clear him of suspicion of leaking the algorithm to Justin. This caused Linus to call them up, and because of the fact that Linus was wearing Kirsten’s sweatshirt, Kirsten realized that Camille and Linus were hooking up with each other. It was Camille’s alibi for not being the source of the leak. They then met Maggie Baptiste (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) at the garage, but before they could confront her, she got shot in the shoulder.
Later, Kirsten confronted her with the leaked algorithm, and Maggie told her that she would never risk her life and her life’s work, and she would never risk the lives of Camille. She described as a “lackluster student.” Linus, who joined the program because he managed to solve a math problem that no one couldn’t, and Cameron, who had been rich and bored with life, especially as she worked hard to “raise them out of obscurity.” Also, she had an alibi- she had been having breakfast with the program director, Leslie Turner (Oded Fehr) at the time it was leaked.
After Kirsten described the scenario she saw in Justin’s mind, Cameron realized that the culprit was Marta Rodriguez (Tiffany Hines), as she was the only one with access to the program who had a butterfly tattoo on her wrist. They also discovered that she had woken up one week ago. Kirsten realized that Marta was the one sending her messages after learning that her specialty was cryptography. After decoding the message, she met Marta outside of the restaurant, and the two went to her house.
There, Kirsten called Cameron and left it on loudspeaker so that they would know what was happening. Inside the house, Marta told her that she could bring Kirsten somewhere safe, as the Stitchers program was a precursor to something bigger. Cameron then showed up just before the police came, and tried to calm Marta, who was now pointing a gun at him, down. Marta then received a phone call, which led her to go outside the house, and let herself get shot.
At the laboratory, Kirsten comforted Cameron, as they weren’t going to stitch into Marta.
At the garage, Maggie met up with Leslie. She confronted him about the fact that Justin had been killed by Leslie in order to figure out who his source had been, and about the fact that sooner or later, Kirsten would discover the truth behind the Stitchers technology. However, Leslie warned her to tell Kirsten anything but the truth.
