The film was set in a dystopian future where a global warming experimentation had gone wrong and frozen the world over. The survivors were aboard the train Snowpiercer, invented by the billionaire, Wilford (Ed Harris). The social division in the train was evident as the elite people were living in the front carriages, while the masses lived in the rear cars. Wilford intended this kind of setting.
The masses were planning to break free from their confinement. Cryptic messages were sent through protein bars, and Curtis (Chris Evans) and his mentor, Gilliam (John Hurt), thought that perhaps somebody was urging them to retaliate. Curtis, together with Gilliam and Edgar (Jamie Bell), tried to free Namgoong Minsu (Song Kang-ho), a Korean security expert. However, he had one condition. He would help them provided that Asung, his daughter, could come with them and be rewarded with a hallucinogenic drug for every door that they manage to open. Tanya (Octavia Spencer) tagged along with the band in search for her missing child.
As of this writing, the critics from Rotten Tomatoes have rated this film with 85%, while 95% of the moviegoers would like to watch it.
Hollywood Reporter’s Clarence Tsui described the film as creative and intellectual to most dystopian future action thrillers today.
“A politicaly charged, fantastical action thriller, which is both contemplative and entertaining, hammering home points about social injustice of the present day – but maybe a bit too overtly,” said Tsui in the Hollywood Reporter review.
Moreover, Scott Foundas of Variety mentioned in his review how great the director, Bong Joon-ho, was in providing and executing a visually satisfying futuristic epic.
