The last few years saw the rise in the number of superhero films, which ultimately led to the conception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has currently spawned out numerous film releases and two television shows; and the DC Cinematic Universe, with films such as the recent “Dark Knight” trilogy (2005, 2008, 2012, respectively); the “Man of Steel” (2013) reboot; and the upcoming “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” movie. However, there had been a recent development in terms of demographic female audiences. Read on to learn more about this story.
This is evident in the changes that film studios Marvel and DC are taking. Recently, Marvel announced that the newest comic book incarnation of Thor will be a woman. The DC Cinematic Universe is finally opening the doors to Wonder Woman, as the super heroine will be featured in the “Batman v. Superman” film. Even Scarlett Johansson joined in on the fun, as her action film, “Lucy,” dominated the box office charts since its release on July 25, 2014. Now, Sony is adding its own super heroine to the mix. According to Deadline, Sony is currently planning a super heroine movie, which will be connected to the “Spider-Man” universe. According to Deadline, Lisa Joy, the co-creator and executive producer of HBO’s “Westworld,” was hired by Sony to write the script for the new super heroine movie. The film will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach. However, despite the exciting news, the specific character that the movie will be about has not yet been revealed. Some of the speculated characters that might become possible subjects for the film are Black Cat, Spider-Woman, Silver Sable, Stunner and Firestar.
Moreover, the potential character of Black Cat was already introduced in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014). She is none other than Felicia, portrayed by Felicity Jones (“Northanger Abbey,” “Doctor Who,” “Brideshead Revisted,” “The Tempest”), the assistant to Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn.
Another speculated character that might gain a movie is Black Widow, who was portrayed by Scarlett Johansson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, according to Variety, Nicole Perlman, who wrote the script for the recently released “Guardians of the Galaxy” film, clarified on Twitter that she did write something for the character of the Black Widow, but she is not pursuing it as of now.
The new super heroine film will be released in 2017, while the third installment to “The Amazing Spider-Man” will be pushed back to 2018 due to its poor performance in the box office. “The Sinister Six,” a film which focuses on the villains of “Spider-Man” when Doctor Octopus gathers them together, will be released in 2016.
And that’s the latest on Sony’s upcoming super heroine film, which will be released in cinemas in 2017. For more news and updates on upcoming films and television shows, keep on following Movie News Guide (MNG).
