It’s all about that bass and the curves. Model Ashley Graham made history as the first ever plus-size model to pose in Sports Illustrated’s “Swimsuit” issue, which hit the newsstands on Deb. 9, 2015. This will surely mark the “Curvy Girl Era” according to press releases. Read on to know more.
According to E! News, Graham flaunted her Size 18 curves on the cover while wearing black bikini and killer stilettos for the swimsuit company, “Swim Suits for All.” The company used the tag #CurvesInBikinis to help women feel great and confident in swimwear. Together of Graham’s support, they also launched an initiative which encourages women to stand proud and show off their curves in social media using #CurvesInBikinis.
“I know my curves are sexy and I want everyone else to know that theirs are too. There is no reason to hide and every reason to flaunt,” Graham said about the campaign as published in the E! News article.
Graham’s modeling career started when she signed a contract with Wilhelmina Models in 2001. Since then, projects and contacts keep coming making her one of the most sought-after personality in the modeling industry where thin models dominate. Before the Sports Illustrated feature, Graham has been featured in famous magazines like Vogue (2009), Bust (2010), Harper’s Bazaar (2014) and Elle (2014) to name a few. She also became an endorser for some famous brands like Levi’s, Marina Rinaldi and appeared in the controversial Lane Bryant TV ad. Her appearance on MTV’s reality show “Made” as a coach had also been a hit.
Moreover, Graham strongly encourages the media to embrace curves and for women of all sizes to love their bodies. E! News reported that in her essay for Net-a-Porter.com, Graham called Jennifer Lawrence “tiny” despite the media labeling her “curvy.”
the 28-year-oldmodel added: “We need role models for young girls who say embrace your curves, who cares if your body isn’t perfect?” the plus size model added.
While there is still a great debate about the discrimination of plus size personalities in the fashion and movie industry, Sports Illustrated and Swim Suits for All have been getting good feedback on their decision to feature Ashley Graham for their campaign.
