The official theatrical release for "Star Trek 3" has been confirmed by Paramount. Read on further details.

Paramount has officially announced the release date for the third installment of the "Star Trek" film franchise, which is due on July 8, 2016. It also marks the 50th anniversary launch of the TV franchise. The announcement came a day after “Fast and Furious” helmer Justin Lin was announced to replace Robert Orci, who stepped down from directing two weeks after replacing J. J. Abrams, who directed the previous installments. Abrams left the franchise due to his commitment with Disney’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Moreover, Comicbook.com reports that Orci will also not be writing for the third installment. In comment threads, Orci revealed that the studio will move forward without his script.

"I’m producing, nothing more or less," Orci wrote in his comment on on TrekMovie, where his username has been confirmed in the past. Patrick McKay and J. D. Payne who co-wrote last year’s installment are likely to be credited as writers.

Based on the "Star Trek" film franchise, the 2009 “Star Trek” serves as a reboot featuring the main characters of the original "Star Trek" TV series albeit portrayed by a new cast. It stars Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Leonard Nimoy, John Cho and Bruce Greenwood as the cast of the Enterprise. The film takes place in an alternate reality due to time travel by Nero and the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy. The alternate timeline was created in an effort to free the film and the franchise from established continuity constraints while simultaneously preserving original story elements. The pic gained critical acclaim and grossed $4 million on its opening day and ended with a box office total of $257,730,019 in the US and $127,764,536 in international markets, for a total worldwide gross of $385,494,555.

Its sequel, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” also received acclaim as well as positive reviews from critics. The sequel grossed $13.5 million on its opening day in the United States and Canada and ended with box office total of $228,778,661 for its US release and $467,365,246 worldwide.
