To say that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is the most anticipated film of the year is an understatement. With the ongoing discussion among the intergalactic-lover fans and moviegoers about the film, many are hoping it will live up to its hype. The excitement is definitely reflected in the manner of how the pre-ticket sales are ongoing.
According to Wall Street Journal, the movie has just raked $ 50 M in the ticket sales with still a month to go before its release date on December 17 in United States. The demand for watching the film is so high that a lot of theater owners have added more screening time for it even at the wee hours. There are some theaters reportedly giving screening schedule at 2AM and 5AM just to let these fans watch especially in the first week of the premiere.
Because of this, critics are already forecasting the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be able to surpass the massive record of “Jurassic World” last June which collected $209 M in its opening week. The latest installment of the franchise will battle out against other films for the Yuletide season and is seen to have the front line in the competition.
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst from Rentrak said “‘The Force Awakens’ presents an unprecedented moviegoing situation. The question is whether the tide it brings to theaters this December will raise all ships or become a black hole where all other movies disappear.”
In a report from Fandango as cited by Variety, the last movie that recorded a huge pre-ticket sales is the “Hunger Games”. Now with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, majority of the Imax screening are fully booked. It is estimated that more than 4,000 theaters will accomodate the showing of the movie across the country.
Will “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” be included in the top grossing films of all time?
