Did Mark Hamill reveal the massive twist in Star Wars: The Last Jedi about 30 years ago? In a new interview unearthed from the ’80s, the actor talked about filmmaker George Lucas’ plans for Luke Skywalker beyond Star Wars: Return of the Jedi which seems to answer one of the persisting mysteries of the new trilogy.

Luke’s Successor

In the new trailer for Episode VIII, viewers have seen that Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) training as a Jedi under Luke Skywalker has already begun. However, it seems like the relationship between the two Force users is not just that of a master and a student. They might be related.

The parentage of Rey has been a question since she first appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Fans know that she was left by her parents in Jakku back when she was just a little girl. She is also not just Force-sensitive, but she was so powerful that she can effectively wield a lightsaber without training and defeat the movie’s villain Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

The identity of her parents has been widely speculated (is she a Skywalker or a Kenobi), but it seems like Hamill has already revealed the answer decades ago. In an unearthed interview with late movie critic Gene Siskel, the actor revealed what Lucas has planned for his character beyond the original trilogy.

“George has talked to me very marginally about doing something at the turn of the century in the last trilogy, but it wouldn’t be on the same plane of existence,” Hamill said (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Siskel commented that it sounds like Lucas has offered Hamill to play a father. While he did not specify that Luke will indeed sire a child in the future, here is what the young actor replied. “You’re a very clever man, Mr. Siskel.”

Here is the interview in question. Hamill starts talking about the future of his character Luke at around the 7:55 mark.

Is Rey Luke’s Daughter?

Lucas is, of course, no longer the brains behind Star Wars. He sold Lucasfilm to Disney for $4.05 billion in 2012. Rian Johnson wrote and directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

That said, plans about the future of Luke Skywalker might have already changed. But as the site pointed out, Lucas shared his plans to the franchise’s new owner and, chances are, some ideas got included in the new trilogy.

Rey was able to wield Luke’s lightsaber when she found it in Maz Kanata’s (Lupita Nyong’o) castle. She was also able to access visions of the past and future upon holding the weapon. \

Moreover, fans pointed out that when Kylo Ren looked into her thoughts in order to find the map leading to the location of Luke, he saw that whenever she could not sleep, she imagines a vast ocean with an island in the middle of it. Considering the final scene in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this detail sounds very important and proves that the Last Jedi is somehow connected with Rey.

Unfortunately, all one can do for now is speculate and wait. Rey’s parentage will unlikely be revealed before Star Wars: The Last Jedi lands in theaters worldwide.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Movie Details

Star Wars Episode VIII is the continuation of the epic story of Rey, Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac) and Kylo Ren. It also stars Billie Lourd, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tan, Domhnall Gleeson, Laura Dern and Carrie Fisher.
