In the saga of “Star Wars,” one would like to think that the universe flourished well after coming out of the shadow of the Galactic Empire. However, the promotional material released in line with the upcoming “Star Wars” film shows a very different story, as two opposing factions have emerged- the First Order and the Resistance, whose existence was explained by actor Oscar Isaac in a recent interview. WARNING: This article will contain spoilers for the “Star Wars” saga and MARVEL comics “Star Wars: Shattered Empire.”
With the bevy of new information provided by all the new and interesting promotional material for the upcoming “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” film, it is quite understandable why one would get a little bit confused.

While the trailers gave long-time fans some hope and the feeling of nostalgia, by seeing familiar faces and things, many questions have also surfaced regarding the characters and events that will be present in the upcoming film.
In order to avoid some confusion, recently, Oscar Isaac, who portrays the Resistance pilot Poe Dameron, sat down with i09 in order to clarify, in particular, what the Resistance is.
If one watches the trailer, it seems as if the Resistance is very similar to the Rebellion in Episodes 4, 5, and 6. However, Isaac maintains that the two are very different from each other.
According to him, based upon the meaning of the word itself, the Rebellion was a movement that took active steps in going against the Galactic Empire. In contrast, the Resistance, is an organization that is more on the “defensive” side of things. According to Den of Geek, the Resistance is also literally resisting the very force it was designed to keep in check- The First Order.
The First Order, according to Den of Geek, came about during the years after the Galactic Empire collapsed, as they tried to fill in that vacuum of power left behind in its wake, while the new Republic was struggling to get to its feet. Therefore, there was a need for a movement such as the Resistance to emerge, so that the First Order wouldn’t overrun the entire galaxy.
This, however, seems to be in the blood of Poe Dameron, as according to Slash Film’s review and recap of a particular issue of MARVEL comics, “Star Wars: Shattered Empire,” Dameron’s parents were part of the Rebellion, and he had actually been born on a Rebel base on Yavin 4. It was the planet that held the Rebel base seen in Episode 4.
