“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” General Leia was once the younger Princess Leia in the one of the earliest film installments of the franchise. Carrie Fisher returned to the same role and before she can fully proceed for the portrayal of the character, she needed to lose weight first. She frankly expressed her disappointment with how the physical looks remain to be the benchmark used for the actors and actresses.
She gave an interview with Good Housekeeping UK as mentioned by Metro. She said, “They don’t want to hire all of me – only about three-quarters! Nothing changes, it’s an appearance-driven thing. I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up. They might as well say get younger, because that’s how easy it is.”
She explained it was a pressure for her to lose weight of more than 35 lbs. in order for her to prepare for the character of now the General Leia. Although it was 38 years ago since she was first casted in the film, Hollywood remains the same in giving importance to the physical characteristics.
She explained the basic steps she did to lose weight, “I did it the same way everybody has to – don’t eat and exercise more! There is no other way to do it. I have a harder time eating properly than I do exercising. It’s easier for me to add an activity than to deny myself something.”
According to People, she has also given advice to the new star Daisy Ridley when it comes to the outfit she will be asked to wear. “You should fight for your outfit. Don’t be a slave like I was.”, she insisted. In the “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi”, Fisher had worn a gold bikini.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Carrie Fisher indeed knows how business is done in Hollywood.
