It was reported back in July that Starz would be adapting Steven Soderbergh’s low budget but critically-acclaimed movie “The Girlfriend Experience” as an anthology series. Now, the show has cast its female lead in the person of Riley Keough. Read on for more details about this latest development.
Released in theaters in 2009, “The Girlfriend Experience” was written, directed and produced by Soderbergh and starred porn star Sasha Gray. The premise of the story involved courtesans who provide more than just sex to their clients, as they also perform other services that make them quasi-lovers, girlfriends or wives. Hence, the service brings to its clients the actual girlfriend experience. Starz is going with the similar premise as the film, but the premium cable network is developing the show as a thirteen-episode anthology, with half-hour running time per episode.
While few details about the TV show’s plot or its characters has come out, it has been revealed that Riley Keough will be stepping up as the female lead, according to Deadline. The actress was a breakout star in the film “Magic Mike” in 2012, where she met Soderbergh. Before this, Keough’s acting credentials were mostly relegated to supporting roles in films like “The Good Doctor” and the “The Runways.” Prior to working with “The Girlfriend Experience,” the actress will be seen in “Mad Max: Fury Road” and the drama “The Greens Are Gone.”
Soderbergh, meantime, will be working on “The Girlfriend Experience” as an executive producer, sitting out any writing or directing duties, as he is already working on two other TV series, such as “The Knick” on Cinemax and “Red Oaks” for Amazon. The show’s script and direction are instead being handled by Lodge Kerrigan (“Keane,” “Clean, Shaven”) and Amy Seimetz (“Sun Don’t Shine”). Kerrigan and Seimetz are going to the divide the task of writing and directing the thirteen parts between them. The show will also have Philip Fleishman on board as producer.
And that’s the latest about “The Girlfriend Experience” which is expected to roll out on Starz by 2015. Riley Keough will headline the anthology series. Keep coming back to Movie News Guide (MNG) as we bring more updates about this show and other television news.
