Premium cable network Starz has put a 13-episode order for Steven Soderbergh’s “The Girlfriend Experience,” which was first released as a movie in 2009. The film version featured porn star Sasha Grey as a Manhattan call girl and explored her encounters and experiences of being in such a profession. Read further to learn how Starz plans to play out the movie into a television series.

Unlike the movie, which featured one central female character, “The Girlfriend Experience” for television will include half-hour installments that will have different courtesans offering more than just sex to their clients. They work to provide TGE, or the girlfriend experience, as lovers who are paid to be in a quasi-relationship.

Steven Soderbergh, who directed and produced the movie release, will executive produce the TV show along with Philip Fleishman. Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz have been enlisted to write and direct the episodes respectively. Casting is still taking place, with filming set to begin in the spring of 2015.

It was Fleishman who opened the idea of turning the movie into a TV show and brought the topic up to Sodenbergh who liked the thought of changing some of its elements, by introducing different cities and different women, to fit the small screen format. This is another one of Soderbergh’s many TV projects, including “The Knicks” for Cinemax and “Red Oaks” for Amazon Prime Instant Video.

The movie version received minimal success, earning only a little over $1 million in the box office worldwide. But it has been critically lauded, with Soderbergh complemented for his work.

“We are all such fans of the movie that the idea of exploring this world through many different characters, voices and points of view was especially intriguing,” said Chris Albrecht, the CEO of Starz, in a press release published on The Hollywood Reporter.

Starz believe that with this show, they will have something unique and exciting to offer their subscribers, as the network continues to beef up their original programming.

And that’s the news for “The Girlfriend Experience,” which will be coming to Starz in 2015. Follow more updates on this only here at Movie News Guide (MNG).
