Film veteran Stephen Chow is ready to take on the Chinese box office during one of the most profitable seasons of the year, the Chinese New Year, with a new comedy entitled “The Mermaid”. Just recently, the the actor and director released the teaser trailer for his latest outing.
Chow, who is known for films like “Kung Fu Hustle” and “Shaolin Soccer”, is back with a supernatural comedy.
The story centers on a man who comes into contact with a mermaid in the most hilarious way possible.
The teaser trailer was released last December 8, 2015, and already has had more than a hundred thousand views.
Fans of Chow have been eagerly waiting for his next film after the massive success of his film, “Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons”, which was also coincidentally released during last year’s Chinese New Year.
“Journey to the West” holds the distinction of being the record holder for being the highest grossing box office movie during the season. Yahoo News reports that it had earned over 1.25 billion renminbi in China alone.
Chow also recently released the trailer and a poster at a promotional press conference in Beijing.
Yibada reports that he quoted from one of Mao Ze Dong’s poems during the press conference, which he felt reflected how “The Mermaid” was just as elusive as the meaning of the poem.
He then went on to say that he believes that the film, the story, and everyone is invincible, but that “being invincible is being lonely”. He then finished the press conference off by saying that he hopes that the viewers will not feel alone after seeing his movie.
The trailer begins hilariously, with actor Deng Chao trying to file a report that he got kidnapped by a mermaid. He then soon got frustrated after the policemen kept on coming up with different sketches of the supposed mermaid.
Also, at the end of the trailer, the titular mermaid was finally shown.
Will this movie rise above the competition to win at the Chinese box office in February 2016?
