Nearly to the date of the movie release 20 years ago, the re-imagination of “12 Monkeys” series has finally earned a premiere date from SyFy. The cable channel also released photos from the pilot episode, which will surely spark the interest and curiosity of science fiction fans everywhere. Read on for the details.

As published on MovieWeb in a press release from SyFy, “12 Monkeys” will officially start on the cable channel on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. SyFy also released a bunch of promotional photos or publicity stills for the series, which are also found on MovieWeb. It features solo shots of the main characters, as well as scenes from the pilot episode.

“12 Monkeys” is lead by Aaron Standford (as James Cole, the time traveler), Amanda Schull (as Dr. Cassandra Railly), Noah Bean (Aaron Marker), Barbara Sukowa (as Jones) and Kirk Acevedo (as Ramse). The cast also includes Tom Noonan (as the mysterious Slender Man) and Emily Hampshire (as Jennifer Goines).

The story follows Cole’s journey from 2043 to the current period in order to find and eliminate a plague that will kill all humans in the future.

A special advance preview of “12 Monkeys” was played for the attendees at the New York Comic-Con on Oct. 11, 2014 and iOS posted a spoiler-free review about it, comparing the series to the movie. iO9 confirms that “12 Monkeys” the TV series is a complete departure from the plot of the movie.

“Even just looking at the casting for the film, it’s pretty clear that the show isn’t the movie. Jeffery Goines is now Jennifer Goines. Kathryn Railly is now Cassandra Railly. While James Cole’s name stays the same, Aaron Stanford is in no way a Bruce Willis-type. And the show’s been updated to take place now,” according to the iO9 review.

“12 Monkeys” is produced by Universal Cable Productions along with Atlas Entertainment, which also did the movie version. Natalie Chaidez is tasked as showrunner, with Terry Matalas & Travis Fickett as writers.

Set your calendars for the premiere of “12 Monkeys,” which will come to SyFy on Friday, Jan. 16, 2015 at 9:00 p.m. The show will have 13 episodes.
