The Magicians,” the upcoming fantasy drama that will be airing on Syfy in 2015, has found its headliners. The cable network has announced that it has chosen Jason Ralph (“Aquarius”) and Sosie Bacon (“The Closer”) to play the lead characters. Read on for more about this news story.

According to a press release posted on various entertainment sites including Variety, Ralph and Bacon will join previously announced actors Stella Maeve (“Chicago PD”), Arjun Gupta (“Nurse Jackie”) and Hale Appleman (“Teeth”) in the series.  The two will assume the role of the main characters, Quentin, and Alice as production of the series starts this week in New Orleans.

Quentin Coldwaters (Ralph) is described as a brilliant and compelling man who is recruited into the Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. As a big fan of the fantasy book series “Fillory” since his childhood, Quentin soon realizes that things he read about in “Fillory” are real, and he also discovers he’s got a great gift for practicing magic.

The actor Jason Ralph got his start in the movie “Brightest Star, I'm Obsessed With You” and has had guest appearances in shows like NBC’s “Blue Bloods” and  HBO’s “Looking.” He will also be seen in the upcoming David Duchovny TV drama “Aquarius” on NBC. When he’s not doing TV projects, Ralph is attached to this theater company and has done off-Broadway shows.

Alice (Bacon), meanwhile, is described as a delicate character, who was born into a family of magicians. But they have failed to teach her to use her abilities and as a student in Brakebills, Alice is sort of an outcast. Nevertheless, because she’s a natural, she is the most gifted person in her class.

The actress Sosie Bacon is from a Hollywood family, as her parents are movie and TV stars Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. She recently finished working on the “The Lost Boy,” an independent movie starring Virginia Madsen and she has also appeared on “The Closer,” her mother’s TV series on TNT.

“The Magicians” is about a group of 20-something individuals who are students of a magic school in New York. The show is from John McNamara (“Prime Suspect”) and Sera Gamble (“Supernatural”) with Michael London (“Milk”) as producer. The series is based on a bestselling book written by Lev Grossman.
