The end of an era it seems, as Sylvester Stallone backs away from starring in the Expendables 4. This is despite what has been reported to be the biggest payday of his career rumored to be a whopping $20 million.
Stallone’s refusal to star in the film has raised quite a few eyebrows given that he was the one who brought the franchise to life. The films pay homage to the blockbuster action films of the 80s and 90s and were met with mixed reactions as well as moderate success in the box office.
Sylvester Stallone Exits Expendables 4
Now, this could all be in jeopardy. With Stallone gone, the final installment of the film series is in a precarious position.
Not only does he have a major role in the film’s production, he also plays the lead role in the films. Additionally, despite being badly bruised, his character is still alive by the end of the third movie.
According to Deadline, Stallone, and producer Avi Lerner often had disagreements regarding the film’s script. Lerner, whose Nu Image/Millennium company financed all the Expendable films, is often unable to find common ground with the actor.
However, whether it’s the script or a new director, Stallone and Lerner’s arguments are often put out over a few cigars. Although this might not be the case for Expendables 4, not after Stallone made his departure public.
There Is Still Hope For Expendables 4 Without Stallone
Still, Lerner has some hope for the franchise stating that the project is not yet dead. Given that it is the final installment of the franchise, he might as well “get it over with” and send it out with a bang. And being an Expendables film, there will definitely be lots of it.
Whether Lerner can recreate the nostalgia that Stallone created with the first three films is still to be seen. After all, it doesn’t hurt to have a former action star co-wrote a blockbuster action film.
Still, there’s still Stallone’s exit as the lead role to consider. After his duel to the death with Mel Gibson’s character, he is still seen with the gang chilling out in a bar.
Though he survived, he was not unscathed. This could very well work for the film and explain his disappearance from the film as him “retiring” and move on.
After all, this wouldn’t be the first time a major action-film franchise let go of their original cast. G.I. Joe: Retaliation also disposed the majority of their original cast although their “retirement” was much more permanent.
So far, no director has been set for this movie. There is also no confirmation whether Stallone wrote the script or he may have left that out too along with his starring role.
Expendables 4 Boasts Of A Stellar Cast Of Action Superstars
The films have rotated some big names in action namely Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford and Kelsey Grammer, Steve Austin, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Which of them will be appearing in the final installment has yet to be announced.
As for Stallone, it was reported that he will play a role in Marvel’s upcoming sequel Guardians of the Galaxy 2. According to Cinemablend, the 70-year old actor was spotted in Atlanta, Georgia where the film was being made.
Sources reveal that Stallone will play one of the Ravagers, a group of space pirates. However, unlike his starring role in the Expendables, his role in Guardians was rumored to be only a cameo.
Nevertheless, it would not be an Expendables 4 without Stallone. Perhaps he put his disagreements with Lerner behind and star in the final installment of the films that commemorates one of Hollywood’s greatest eras.
