“The very earliest people who made film were magicians,” Francis Coppola once said. No wonder wizards, sorcerers and magicians have been one of the favorite subjects for film and TV. Read on as we conjure magic and give you 10 of the famous on-screen wizards.
Akiro (“Conan the Barbarian”)
He is the wizard behind the “Conan” movies’ narration (“Conan the Barbarian” and “Conan the Destroyer”). He used to tend an ancient cemetery before meeting Conan. He also became Shadizar’s chief wizard in “Conan the Destroyer.”
Mickey Mouse (“Fantasia”)
Who could forget that part when Mickey messed up the sorcerer’s castle while trying on some magic? He was the sorcerer in Disney’s “Fantasia.”
The Wizard (“The Wizard of Oz”)
He may not have magical powers like the others on this list, but his wit and brilliant advice were able to help Dorothy Gale, which is mystical.
The High Aldwin (“Willow”)
This four-feet-tall Nelwyn wizard was Willow Ufgood’s mentor. He was the one who advised Willow to go on a quest and taught him to always trust his instincts.
Tim the Enchanter (“Monty Python and the Holy Grail”)
This eccentric ram-horn-hat-wearing magical man is one of Time’s most beloved wizards. He was the one who helped King Arthur and his company in their journey through Cave of Caerbannog.
Lord Voldemort (“Harry Potter” franchise)
He-who-shall-not-be-named is the complex but charismatic wizard in the “Harry Potter” franchise. He is one of the characters who brought life and twists to Harry Potter’s adventures and tales. Though he was defeated in “Deathly Hallows Part 2,” he has left a mark on the viewers and will never be forgotten.
In this 1981 film, Merlin appears as a very powerful wizard and has shown his fearless side when he tamed beasts and fought Morgana. Unlike the children’s version, Merlin in Excalibur was depicted as a crafty and cunning wizard.
Albus Dumbledore (“Harry Potter” franchise)
This powerful wizard was Harry Potter’s mentor, the Transfiguration Professor and Headmaster of Hogwarts. He was also the only wizard Voldemort has ever feared. Aside from the Harry, Hermione and Ron, Dumbledore has gained popularity in Pottermore with the release of his pensieve.
Harry Potter (“Harry Potter” franchise)
While his magic and wizarding skills are not the best in Hogwarts, Harry’s potentials as a good friend and leader earned him the second spot on this list. And who can forget his Quidditch talent and his struggles to pull through? He was “the boy who lived” indeed.
Gandalf (“The Lord of the Rings” franchise)
Gandalf, with his iconic grey hair and beard, is the army of the West and the Fellowship’s leader. He went from being “Gandalf the Grey” to “Gandalf the White” after his battle with a Balrog, which was an indication that he has become more powerful than before. Now that’s how a wizard should be. Plus, he was played by Sir Ian McKellen! Gandalf is also part of “The Hobbit” film series.
