For the second consecutive week, The Avengers topped the box office in North America and Canada. The Marvel studios film earned just over $103.2 million at the box office domestically to increase its ten day domestic take to over $373.2 million. The movie, that brings together four of Marvel’s superheroes, has smashed records every day since it debuted last weekend.
The film passed the $1 billion mark in worldwide sales after only 19 days of being released. The superheroes film easily outdistanced second place finisher Dark Shadows. The take off, of the popular hit TV show of the same name. The movie stars Johnny Depp and was expected to compete with The Avengers this weekend. However, its take was a disappointing $28.8 million. One reason fewer people went to see the movie might be because they were watching The Avengers.
Third place over the weekend went to Think Like a Man. Fourth and fifth place went to The Hunger Game and to The Lucky One, respectively. The Avengers also became the first movie, since records have been kept, that took in over $100 million in its second weekend of domestic release. The previous record was Avatar, which took in $75.5 million in its second weekend.
The Avengers is the year’s biggest hit worldwide in just 19 days and is close to surpassing The Hunger Games that currently has $386.9 million after this past weekend.
The Avengers has flown past all of its superhero predecessors. The best of the previous movies was Iron Man, which took in $318.4 million for its entire run.
