The Big Bang Theory Recap: The Anxiety Optimization

The Big Bang Theory” Season 8 Episode 13 “The Anxiety Optimization” aired on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. Sheldon enlists the help of his friends regarding a work situation, while Howard invents the game “Emily or Cinnamon.” Find out what happened in the recap below.

Sheldon (Jim Parsons) is testing out his headphone to see if it will be able to cancel noises in the background. He’s also making sure that his work area is free from all distractions, with his tea perfectly warmed, his motivational poster set up and his roommate Leonard (Johnny Galecki) out of the house with his girlfriend Penny (Kaley Cuoco). He’s working on his dark matter project, which is why all these preparations are necessary. But after a few hours, Sheldon still has a blank board. He realizes that everything around him may be too perfect, it has inhibited his ability to think and produce.

So he asks his friends to make his process a bit more challenging. Maybe he will be able to produce better under pressure. With his girlfriend Amy’s (Mayim Bailik) help, the two worked on Sheldon’s brain activity to measure anxiety. He wears a skullcap that makes him look rather silly, but it’s all in the name of science, right?

Amy’s first try at putting Sheldon under pressure is weak, as he quickly pops the balloon Amy uses to distract him while working. She starts yelling at him for bungling her experiments on him, and it looks like this did the trick. They yelling sends Sheldon’s anxiety levels upward.

Meanwhile, the guys have been more than eager and willing to help Sheldon with this challenge, simply because he has given them the license to disagree with him and negate everything he says. A free pass to say things that will upset Sheldon? Of course, Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Howard (Simon Helberg) and Leonard took advantage of this!

But then Sheldon’s behavior starts to change, as this anxiety challenge is slowly affecting his sanity. He barges into Penny’s apartment, where the girls are discussing women stuff, and ask the girls who among them has the best cervix. He wakes up Leonard in the middle of his sleep one night, using sounds of Godzilla, Darth Vader and The Joker. He would’ve added Taylor Swift’s music in it, but he admits he likes the young performer.

Soon, the guys notice Sheldon’s behavior, and during date night with him, Amy tells him that perhaps he needs to calm down, take a break from work and remove the smelly skullcap off. He has not eaten nor slept well for days. Amy lets him out of her apartment, and Leonard and Penny take him in. They bring Sheldon to bed, where Penny sings his favorite lullaby. A few hours of sleep, and finally, Sheldon is back to normal.

Meanwhile, Howard comes up with a game called “Emily or Cinnamon,” where the gang has to guess phrases that Raj said to either his girlfriend or his dog. These are phrases like: “Check it out, I got us matching sweaters!” or “We’re both Libras,” which incidentally, are all directed at Cinnamon the dog.

Raj is starting to get embarrassed by this game but continues to defend his actions. When he learns that Emily doesn’t mind at all that he treats her and his dog equally with love and affection, Raj is vindicated. So much for Howard’s silly game! Raj kisses his girlfriend in front of his friends, but she balks when she discovers dog hair in his mouth.
