“The Big Bang Theory” Season 8 Episode 15 “The Comic Book Store Regeneration” aired on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. The cast say goodbye to a one of the show’s intriguing characters. Find out what happened in the episode in the recap below.
It opens with Sheldon (Jim Parson) and Amy (Mayim Bailik) having lunch in her office when Barry Kripke (guest star John Ross Bowie) walks in to thank Amy for helping him with his string theory research. Sheldon becomes disappointed learning about this because his girlfriend helped out a rival for work that he used to do before. Sheldon takes his frustration out by doing laundry, where he’s advised by Penny (Kaley Cuoco) to let it go. Amy was only trying to help a fellow scientist.
But Sheldon, true to form, cannot easily let things go. Penny helps him by undergoing visualization, a trick she learned studying acting. As usual, it’s quite hard to teach Sheldon things like this, and he ends up revealing to Penny that Amy has been doing an experiment on her versus her lab monkeys. Can Penny let go of this thought?
Naturally, Penny feels insulted and confronts her friend about it. Amy makes things light of the situation by advising Penny to fill out some paperwork, as she could get money from the facility for being a test subject. It makes Penny feel worse.
Meanwhile, Stuart (guest star Kevin Sussman) is re-opening his comic book store, and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) are already there to help with the preparations. Howard (Simon Halberg) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) walk in, with the former still upset that Stuart gets funding for the store from his mother. Worse, he sees his mom’s old den couch in there. He accuses Stuart of being a leecher, and the situation gets so tense that Raj and Leonard decide to head to the deli to get the food for the event.
While at the deli, Raj and Leonard spot actor Nathan Fillion (as himself) eating. They try to talk to him and gush over how much they’re fans of his work. But the guy interjects that he only looks like the actor. Raj, however, presses on, so Nathan finally relents with a selfie. However, he’s not quite happy they interrupted him eating.
It’s finally the opening of the comic book store, and as they all celebrate, Howard gets a phone call from his aunt in Florida, where Mrs. Wolowitz has been vacationing. His mom apparently died in her sleep, leaving Howard stunned and sad.
The group huddle around their friend to comfort him, and Sheldon speaks up to tell Howard that he’s still lucky he got his friends with him at this worst time in his life. It’s a very emotional scene that for a moment, everyone thought Sheldon would tell Howard to just “let it go.”
Back in the apartment, the guys confirm that Howard and Bernadette are bound for a plane to Florida to get his mother’s remains, while the rest are gathered to toast Mrs. Wolowitz, who, despite her annoyances, was like a mother to them.
This is the show’s way of paying tribute to Carol Ann Susi, the actress who provided the voice for Mrs. Wolowitz. She died in November 2014 due to cancer. The show will surely be different without her. She will be missed.
