“The Big Bang Theory” Season 8 Episode 12 “The Space Probe Disintegration” aired on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. on CBS. During a day of activities with their girlfriends, Sheldon and Leonard end up having a confrontation. Meanwhile, Howard tries to distract Raj, who’s worrying over the space probe. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.
Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) are playing Lord of the Rings Risk when Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Amy (Mayim Bailik) arrive. The girls are expecting to have lunch with the guys and not a day of board games. They’ve always been doing what the guys want to do. So today, they take charge and pick their activities. Only, it’s not quite easy, with Amy’s limitations. She can’t do horseback riding or ice skating because of her physical quirks, so Sheldon suggests they do what the ladies love to do best — shopping!
So, as the girls look around for clothes to try on, Sheldon and Leonard sit on the couch and talk about mundane but geeky things, such as how people would live today if there were no smartphones. They also try to play Lord of the Rings Risk using only their imagination.
Leonard commends Sheldon for handling this shopping day with the girls, to which Sheldon says is not surprising at all as he’s always been willing to compromise. This conversation quickly escalates to an argument because Leonard points out how Sheldon hardly ever compromises, how he’s very hard to live with. He couldn’t even move in with Penny because the last time he did this, Sheldon became an emotional wreck and ran away.
Leonard: You have no idea how much you inconvenience the lives of everyone around you, it’s exhausting!
Sheldon points out that Leonard isn’t exactly being tolerant of him, that he’s quite mean and he knows it when Leonard rolls his eyes or dishes out sarcastic comments towards him. To settle the matter, they agree to make real compromises and keep this. Leonard can move in with Penny slowly, such as one night a week.
Later, they spend the rest of the day doing crafts, as suggested by Amy.
The B-side of this episode features a worried Raj (Kunal Nayyar). The space probe project he worked on many years ago is finally landing on Pluto, and he’s not sure if it will work and gather data. What if it won’t? What if it was destroyed during its space travel? He’s a nervous wreck.
Howard (Simon Halberg) helps his best friend calm down, but nothing works. So he and Raj drive around until they reach a Hindu temple. Howard is surprised. Ever since he’s met Raj, he has not seen him practice his faith. Raj tells him that when he’s worried and stressed, he takes comfort in his religion, even if at times, he doesn’t understand it. But before they head inside, they receive a text message. The probe is sending reports. It is working successfully.
The end of this episode shows Leonard sleeping in Penny’s bed, as it is their first night together as roommates (for one night a week). However, the bedroom door is open, and on Penny’s couch, Sheldon settles to sleep.
