“The Blacklist” Season 2 Episode 7 “The Scimitar (No. 22)” aired last Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, at 10:00 p.m. on NBC. In this episode, the team raced against time as they tried to protect the top three nuclear scientists of the Department of Defense. Aside from it, they needed to track down a criminal known as The Scimitar. He was sent by the Iranian government in order to eliminate America’s top nuclear scientists, as a joint Mossad-CIA operation had targeted and killed the Iranian’s top nuclear scientist. Later on, Mossad Agent Samar Navabi (Mozhan Marno) discovered that the case was closer and more personal to her than she would have expected. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) continued to struggle with his drug dependency problem, while FBI Agent Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) continued to track down Berlin on her own. Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) spent more time with Zoe D’Antonio (Scottie Thompson), only to reveal who she truly was in the end. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began at a bar in Dubai, where Mossad Agent Navabi (Mozhan Marno) seduced a man named Kian Nouri. Minutes later after entering a room together, he fell from the balcony to his death.
Meanwhile, FBI Agent Elizabeth “Liz” Keen (Megan Boone) paid a visit to her husband, Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold), whom she was keeping as a prisoner on a boat. In exchange for some blankets so that he would not freeze to death, he gave her the name of the arms dealer that supplies arms to Berlin — Savan Volkoff.
This time, Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) requested to meet both Liz and Mossad Agent Samar Navabi. At a vintage record store, Red told them the story of an Iranian businessman who had died the past week as he had fallen of a 12-story balcony after meeting a woman at a bar. Samar then revealed that it was a joint CIA-Mossad operation, and the target, Kian Nouri, was the Iranian’s top nuclear scientist. In retaliation, the Irani sent a man called The Scimitar, who was “one part hit man, two parts con man,” in order to kill America’s top nuclear scientists.
At the task force headquarters, FBI Agent Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix), the director of their task force, learned that if the three lead scientists were captured. They would be able to get their hands on the Department of Defense’s Cloud Top Project in which they were designing a warhead. The Assistant Secretary informed him that they would be able to put two of the scientists into protective custody. They would not be able to put Amanda Collins, the third scientist, under lockdown as she was an astrophysicist and was going to give a speech soon.
Afterwards, Liz talked to FBI Agent Donald Ressler (Diego Kattenhoff). She knew that he was hooked on his pain medication. However, he told her that it had been a week since he had last used it. He would tell Cooper himself if he couldn’t handle it alone.
Meanwhile, Tom’s guard informed Liz that there were guards who were getting suspicious of their boat. They would have to move Tom again soon. She then met up with Volkoff and informed him that she had nominated him to be on the FBI’s Most Wanted list. Because of this, he had now had two choices — One is to let Berlin kill him as there would be a possibility that he would tell the FBI about Berlin, or to set up a meeting with Berlin so that she could get to him. Later on, she told Red that she had gotten this information from a reliable FBI confidential informant. However, Red deduced that the FBI did not know about it. She was hunting for Berlin on her own and wanted Berlin to be killed, which was why she went to Red and not to the FBI. Red then deduced that if Liz had not told him that she had killed Tom, then he was her source. Before she left, he told her to let him know of the time and location of the meet when Volkoff got back to her.
At the task force headquarters, Aram Mojtabai (Amir Airson) traced the live feed that was being broadcast from a hidden camera made by the Iranians. They found it in the Department of Defense to a construction site in New Carrollton. When they got there, they found the place empty, except for folders of surveillance on a Defense Security Services Agent named John Reese. They were able to get Reese in time, but before they could escape, they went under heavy fire and a flash bomb was thrown into their SUV. Because of this, Aram and the task force lost all communication with Liz and Ressler.
Liz woke up in Bethesda National Hospital. She was told that she had a fractured arm and that Ressler had some head trauma. However, the doctor told her that they were the only ones who were found at the crash site. Liz then asked for a phone and called Cooper. She told him that they were okay, and they were at Bethesda. Cooper then sent Samar to go to Bethesda for them. She also warned him to have the Department of Defense cancel Amelia Collins’ speech and to put her immediately into protective custody. After she hung up, she found it strange that she could feel a strange substance on her hands.
At headquarters, Aram informed Cooper that after checking the records, he had discovered that the Department of Defense did not have an employee named John Reese and that Bethesda had no record of Liz and Ressler being admitted.
Liz was able to steal the nurse’s scissors and cut herself free of her cast, after seeing that Ressler’s chart was empty.
Meanwhile, Red and Zoe D’Antonio ate some anchovies on the steps of her food truck. She then opened up to him and told him that she knew that her father, whom she had not seen in a very long time, had done many unforgiveable things in the past. After a few sips of wine, she began to feel strange. She then realized that Red had placed something in the wine and was taken away by Dembe and Red.
At headquarters, they realized that the entire thing was a set up in order for them to react and expose the name of the third scientist — Amelia Collins. Because of this, the task force went to the hotel where she was supposed to give her speech in order to secure her.
Meanwhile, Liz’s doctor, who was, in reality, The Scimitar, prepared to leave in order to get Amelia Collins, whose name he had acquired after listening to the recorded conversation Liz had with Cooper. Liz managed to sedate the nurse who was going to sedate her, and together with Ressler, they were able to escape, only to find themselves in a warehouse.
Meanwhile, Samar went to Red as she knew that Liz and Ressler would be in deep trouble by now as they had been The Scimitar’s captives for more than two hours. She then told him that she thought that a Mossad target named Ali Hassan might know The Scimitar’s location as he specialized in providing fake passports, money and fake documents for those who needed it. The Scimitar probably had gone to him first for some help and money. Red then revealed that he had given the case to her, as The Scimitar was the man who had orchestrated the bombing that had killed her brother. After paying a visit to Ali, they discovered the location of one of the warehouses that he had lent to The Scimitar. Thanks to this, Samar was able to collect both Liz and Ressler, and they headed to the hotel in order to help capture The Scimitar.
The Scimitar was able to abduct Amelia Collins and tried to smuggle her out in a luggage bag. He was unsuccessful as Liz was able to identify him as the doctor that had treated her after she was abducted.
As his mission had failed, he decided to go to Ali for help in order to get out of the country. However, only Red was there, waiting for him. He then called Samar over and left Samar to do whatever she wanted with him. There, she learned from him that The Scimitar had spoken to her brother before the bombing happened and that it seemed like there were some parts of her brother that she did not know of before.
Back at the task force headquarters, Ressler commented to Liz that he had never felt better that week. He had been given so much drugs when they were abducted. However, later on, he decided to flush the last of his pain medication down the drain.
They were then informed that The Scimitar had been found in a river. He had been shot “point blank in the head” — execution style. However, they could not figure out who did it.
At the boat, Liz told Tom that they would have to wait and see how Red’s meeting with Berlin will turn out. Tom then told her that the only way for her to be rid of him was to let him go because if she killed him, she would carry that with her for the rest of her life. He then begged her to look him in the eyes when she killed him.
At the meeting, Berlin was unfazed to see that he was meeting Red and not Volkoff. Red told him that he did not need to come, but he had as he wanted to clear up the misunderstanding that seemed to have fueled his war against Red. Red swore that he did not kill Berlin’s daughter and brought Zoe forward. Berlin thought that she was his daughter, but Red told him that Zoe was his daughter.
