After breaking box office records around the world in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Emma Watson returns to the big screen this month. This time around, the Harry Potter alum will tackle privacy in an increasingly more digital world in The Circle. In a new interview, the 27-year-old reveals how the new movie has affected her own personal life.
A Cautionary Tale
The Circle centers around Mae (Watson), a woman who gets a job at the largest and most powerful technology and social media company in the world. In the beginning, she saw her work as an opportunity of a lifetime. But, one day, she was asked by the company founder Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks) to join an experiment that aims to push the boundaries of privacy and ethics.
As a celebrity, Watson tries to keep her personal life away from the cameras. In fact, while she loves and appreciates her fans, she tries not to take photos with people just so that she could keep her location a secret (but she would willingly talk to them and answer their questions). However, filming her new movie made her even more scared about her privacy.
In a conversation with Jessica Chastain for Interview Magazine, The Zookeeper’s Wife actress asked Watson if the new tech thriller has affected her everyday life. This is what the Harry Potter star said:
“Oh my God, yes,” Watson admitted. “I set even more boundaries than I had before between my public and my private lives. It made me think a lot about what I would do if I had children.”
While Watson keeps a healthy social media presence, she still makes sure not to overshare details about her everyday life. The young actress even deleted the e-mail app on her phone in order to “create serious boundaries.”
She, however, understands and appreciates what social media can do to bring people together. “[B]ut used in the wrong way, it’s incredibly dangerous,” she added. The Internet, she pointed out, also needs to be governed not to suppress freedom, but to protect people.
The Circle and Social Media
Watson who read the book before signing up to the movie explained that The Circle from James Ponsoldt is a cross between The Social Network, All About Eve and Panic Room.
She explained that it is like The Social Network because the movie deals with the relationship between technology and the human need to feel loved and be seen. Meanwhile, it is somehow similar to All About Eve because it also highlights female relationships in a world dominated by men. And it is reminiscent of Panic Room for its intensity.
The increasing importance of social media in everyone’s life does play a huge role in the upcoming movie. So much that Hanks admitted that his character Eamon was based on real-life tech mogul Jack Dorsey.
In an interview with the Twitter CEO himself, Hanks and the cast revealed that the movie is essentially about tech giants like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple. Patton Oswalt argued that fame is not achieved but “being afflicted on people.” In future, he thinks that people might choose to completely disconnect from social media which prompted Hanks to quip, “Wouldn’t that be great, Jack?”

The movie also stars John Boyega (of Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and Karen Gillan (of Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). Ellar Coltrane, Glenne Headly, Nate Condry, Mamoudou Athie and Bill Paxton also appear. Based on a best-selling novel of the same title written by Dave Eggers, The Circle will be released on Apr. 28 in theaters worldwide.
