Based on the novel by David Ebershoff , “The Danish Girl” is much more than just a story of a transgender girl. The film starts with the love story of artist Gerda Wegener (Alicia Vikander) and her husband Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne). The simple love story of the married couple takes a turn when Gerda asks her husband to stand as a female model.
Einer soon realizes an attraction for female physical appearance and begins living as a woman named Lili Elbe (the first recipient of sex reassignment surgery). The decision is fully supported by Gerda, which shows the supportive and understanding quality of the lady. Things turn ugly when a third person, Hans Axgil (Matthias Schoenaerts), enters the life of the two. Will they be able to stay in a relationship even after this interference? What is the true identity of Einar Wegener? Is he the lovable husband of Gerda Wegener or a beautiful lady named Lili Elbe?
Eddie Redmayne playing the role of Einar Wegener and Lili Elbe has done true justice to his role in “The Danish Girl” and proves why he is an Academy Award winner. The character seems so real that you might believe that the Einer and Lili are really two different personalities. Alicia Vikander, as seen in the character of Einer’s wife, shows the actress is equally a good match to a superior actor like Eddie Redmayne.
The initial choice of director Tom Hooper was Charlize Theron for the role of Gerda Wegener but was later replaced by Gwyneth Paltrow after leaving the project. The second choice also could not stay connected to the project for longer and very soon Gwyneth Paltrow also left the project due to location changes. On June 19, 2014, Alicia Vikander was announced to be casted and the actress too, has proved that she was the perfect choice for the role and the director Tom Hooper, has made no mistake.
“The Danish Girl” has been widely appraised by film critics all around the world.
All in all, the movie is just perfect with the best star cast, superb story, and great direction. Audiences who want to see more than just a love story must watch “The Danish Girl”.
