The Fall” Season 2 Episode 4 “Strangler” aired on Thursday, Dec 4, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. The police are closing on their prime suspect, Paul Spector, but they still haven’t found Rose Stagg. Find out what happened in this episode in the recap below.

After discovering that Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) was in her hotel room at the end of last week’s episode, DSI Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) further found evidence of this through a CCTV camera set in the hall of the hotel. She showed the sequence to her boss, Jim Burns (John Lynch), and they both realized that at that time Jim was in Stella’s room, Spector was also there, hearing everything they said about the case. Worse, Jim was worried the strangler also witnessed his indiscretions with Stella.

Stella revealed that Spector violated her by going through her journal. He left an entry for her to read. She’s extra upset that now, her diary has become part of evidence, when it was something private.

Stella: It’s not procedural. It’s personal.

Meanwhile, her staff found out more about Spector’s activities as a bereavement counselor. Stella realized that he may be also counseling Annie (Karen Hassan), his surviving victim, so the police rushed to the hospital to secure her. True enough, Spector showed up at the hospital, just minutes before Stella was able to hide Annie, who was puzzled about what was happening. Later, Annie began to remember some details of her abduction.

Spector was suspicious as he thought he had scheduled for Annie to get a haircut. But he was told that the patient was getting another operation. He knew that something was up, so he quickly left the hospital. Only, on his way out, he was met by his wife, Sally (Bronaugh Waugh), who had been trying to get in touch with him the whole day. Whatever Spector planned was briefly halted, as he had to bring Sally and his kids to a party outside of town. The police was doing surveillance of the family this whole time.

As the Spectors were occupied at the children’s party, another team got to work and broke into the Spectors’ house, where they installed cameras and took photos. However, one of the cops had an accident, causing the ceiling on Sally and Paul’s bedroom to collapse. They were supposed to come in and get out clean, but what were they to do now that there’s a huge hole in the bedroom?

Stella: Is there a water tank in the loft? Make it look like a flood and then get out.

Why the police didn’t want to make an arrest just yet is perhaps part of the game plan, as Rose Stagg (Valene Kane) was still missing. A body turned up, which Stella feared was Stagg. But later, it was discovered that this body was not murdered. The woman was a suicide victim, so Stagg was still out there. At this point, a new detective has joined Stella’s team, Detective Sergeant Tom Anderson (Colin Morgan) to follow up on Stagg's case.

Meanwhile, the party the Spectors attended was over, and so they headed for home, where they discovered the house was leaking water at the front door and everywhere. Paul instructed his wife to wait outside as he checked the place in the dark. He saw what happened in the bedroom and then later told his wife to bring the kids to her mother. They will not be staying in this house for a while. The police, as usual, was watching from the opposite house this whole time.

When Sally and the kids left, Paul returned inside the house and further surveyed the damage in the bedroom. He fished out notebooks from the ceiling, which the police missed seeing, apparently. It contained details of what looked like Spector’s twisted fantasies against his victims.

The episode closed with Spector chatting up Katie (Aisling Franciosi) on Skype in his house's study. They talked about handling anger, and he revealed his anger towards his mother. He also advised the young babysitter to nurture her anger and envy in order to use this to “move forward.” This showed a deeper, darker side to Spector once again, reiterating just how psychologically damaged he is.

Meanwhile, Stella was at the morgue checking the body of the suicide victim and wondered — where the heck was Rose Stagg?
