“The Fall” Season 2 Episode 5 “The Fall” aired on Thursday, Dec 11, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on BBC Two. So many arrests were made in this week’s installment. But DSI Stella Gibson and the main suspect, Paul Spector, have yet to face off. Find out what happened in this season’s second to the last episode in the recap below.
There were plenty of evidence and proof of Paul Spector’s (Jamie Dornan) involvement of the crimes; the most crucial of which was the disappearance of Rose Stagg (Valene Kane). But DSI Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson) wanted to be painstakingly thorough in reviewing all of these. During the briefing with her team, she told everyone that Anderson (Colin Morgan) will have to do the main interrogation of the suspect, should the time come.
Through some digging into Paul’s previous records as a child, the police found out that Spector’s father was originally a John Paul Marshall, who changed his name to John Paul Spector to follow that of his adoptive father. The police also learned that he’s still alive but is in a prison in Canada for murder.
Chief Jim Burns (John Lynch) was also doing his own digging of Spector’s past, visiting the convicted pedophile Father Jensen (Sean McGinley) in prison to ask questions about their suspect. Jensen headed the orphanage where Spector once lived in his young life, and the priest said he remembered the boy.
Jensen is quite the creepy character, who claimed all the boys he abused consented to the act, but now, they were too afraid to face their own demons. He declared that he never touched Spector, who at that time, went by the name of Peter Baldwin. He left the orphanage for another facility though, and the priest noted that it was then that Spector started his obsession, his criminal behavior, which involved girls. He would break into houses and steal underwear, as well as stalk the women he fancied. Even then, he kept everything in a journal.
The police, which has been doing full surveillance on Spector, his wife and his house, as well as Katie (Aisling Franciosi), has had a lot of action this week in this aspect. First, they followed Katie, the young babysitter, when she dropped a love lock on the bridge. The lock had the words “Paul & Katie” written on it. Then they followed her to the hotel where Spector was staying. Stella, who remained in the control room at the police station all throughout the surveillance, immediately ordered this hotel room secured as it was a crime scene. When the police found Katie inside to arrest her, she was in the midst of destroying what looked like even more evidence.
Then the police also arrested Sally (Bronagh Waugh), Paul’s wife, for obstruction of justice. During her interrogation, she admitted that Paul had asked her to lie to the police because he’s been having an affair with the minor, Katie. Was this what the arrest was about? Sally had no clue about how deep Paul’s crimes went.
Then finally, they were on to Spector, who looked like he knew he was being watched. He tried to shake off those tailing him, and they did lose his tracks inside the botanic gardens. However, as Spector thought he was on the clear, he ran into Jimmy Tyler (Brian Milligan), the husband of one of Spector’s counselling patients.
Jimmy demanded to know where his wife was, and then the confrontation became violent. A witness called the police, and they were on the scene almost immediately. However, a shootout took place between the police and Jimmy and his companion, with Spector caught in the middle. Jimmy got away, leaving his companion dead, before the police back-up arrived. But they were able to keep Spector where he was.
After processing the crime scene, Spector was let go. But not a few meters off, he was arrested by Anderson for the disappearance of Rose. This was part of Stella’s plan. They needed to draw out Spector about Rose first, before bringing all the other charges. However, he kept his mouth shut during the entire interrogation with Anderson.
So Stella had another ploy, which she hoped would get a reaction from Spector. She sent one of the attractive police sergeants to the cell where the suspect was locked up to tell him that he was also being arrested for Annie Brawley’s case and the murder of her brother. Spector, however, was still unmoved and unhinged. He kept it cool all this time.
Meanwhile, part of the evidence that Stella was looking into were videos of Rose, which they downloaded from Spector’s phone. It showed the woman pleading for her release from her abductor, and it left Stella in tears after watching this. By the episode’s end, her team of police finally found the hut they believed to be the place where Rose was being kept. There was a burned car parked there too.
