After over a decade, The Incredibles is finally getting a sequel and, this time around, the story will be all about the matriarch of the superhero family, Elastigirl. On D23 Expo this weekend, Pixar shared a bit more information about the anticipated animated movie.
Elastigirl’s Time To Shine
At a time when superhero movies come to a dime a dozen, the animated movie, The Incredibles arguably remains at the top of the crop. Director Brad Bird’s 2004 movie became an instant classic in its genre; it won two Academy Awards including one for Best Animated Feature Film. Thirteen long years later, fans are still eagerly waiting for its sequel.
Disney and Pixar hhaveannounced that The Incredibles 2 is in the works and, this weekend, more information about the anticipated new movie has been revealed. In fact, Bird and Pixar Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter shared that the next adventure will see Helen Parr a.k.a. Elastigirl, voiced by Holly Hunter, at the forefront of the action.
Not much is known about the plot, but it makes sense to switch the spotlight onto other members of the family considering that the original The Incredibles movie was all about Bob Parr or, secretly, Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson) who was bored of his quiet suburban life that he decided to go back into the business of superheroic crime fighting.
Mr. Incredible Discovers Jack-Jack’s Powers
There were other details given about what Elastigirl will be up to next. While the fan expo did show a clip from the upcoming movie, it focused on another fan-favorite, Jack-Jack, who no one knows has a number of superpowers. In The Incredibles 2, the family will finally discover just how powerful their youngest born is.
io9 published a description of the short clip released at D23 this weekend. Jack-Jack, transfixed with a black-and-white crime movie, gets on a pursuit with a raccoon that resembles the robber on his TV. The toddler transports himself through the glass, grabs a piece of chicken from the raccoon and hit the animal. He levitates the cover of the garbage can which made the raccoon angry and a fight ensues.
There was kicking and punching. Jack-Jack got a leverage when he went full-on the Human Torch (a power he already showed in the first movie) and started throwing fiery lawn chairs at his animal opponent. Then, Jack-Jack started shooting laser beams from his eyes, blowing stuff up. When the raccoon pounced on the youngest member of the Incredibles, he turned into slime.
Just then, Mr. Incredible woke up to see the action in their own backyard. He ran outside to grab Jack-Jack, but the boy multiples into five Jack-Jacks and continued pursuit of the raccoon. The proud father exclaimed, “You’ve got powers!”
The Incredibles 2 Movie Details
At the panel, they also revealed that while fans waited 13 long years for the sequel, no time passed at all for the superhero family. The Incredibles 2 will begin exactly a second after the 2004 animated hit movie.
“It starts right as the first one finishes, so it just carries on,” they stated during Disney’s Animated Feature Films panel at D23 Expo. “It starts with the Underminer and a big old set piece. You know that at the end of the first movie when he comes up and you see the family dressed as superheroes, well that’s where start this movie.”
Both Nelson and Hunter have been confirmed for the sequel. Samuel L. Jackson, who voiced Lucius Best a.k.a. Frozone, will also return to the anticipated movie. Sarah Vowell will once again voice Violet, while Huck Milner has been cast for the role of Dash.
The Incredibles 2 will be released on June 15, 2018.
