The anger of North Korea might have only contributed to the success of James Franco and Seth Rogen’s The Interview. A few years ago, the duo faced a challenge when cinemas refused to screen the comedy movie. However, over two years after its premiere, the movie is enjoying a long overdue success as it emerges as Google Play’s Best-Selling Movie.
Finally Finding Its Audience
The Interview reportedly outsold blockbuster movies such as Frozen, Deadpool and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This comes from the data released by Google on Monday. The comedy movie has also been available to stream on Netflix for close to two years now, noted Variety.
Franco and Rogen owe much of the movie’s success from North Korean hackers who threatened major theaters from screening the movie. It initially was set to be screened in over 3,000 theaters in the United States. However, this led to a cyber-attack against Sony that released private correspondences between employees and other documents. As a result, the entertainment studio canceled the comedy’s theatrical release in 2014. Instead, the movie was distributed through digital outlets such as Google Play, Netflix, iTunes and others.
By Jan. 2015, the Rogen-Franco comedy grossed over $40 million from digital purchases and rentals. It was purchased and rented for more than 5.8 million times since its release in Dec. 24, 2014 to Jan. 18, 2015. It also enjoyed a limited release in selected theaters in the U.S. but ticket sales were not as impressive.
The Interview Movie Details
The Interview was co-directed by Rogen. It stars Franco as Dave Skylark, a journalist who set up an interview with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. After hearing about the arrangement, the CIA instructs Franco’s character to assassinate the dictator. Rogen also appears in the movie as Aaron Rapaport, a TV producer.
Lizzy Caplan, Diana Bang, Timothy Simons also star. Comedian Randall Park played the role of Kim Jong Un. The actor of South Korean descent told Stephen Colbert last year that there had been some hesitations to leave the U.S. and venture into Asia after his role as the North Korean leader.
Park currently stars in the ABC comedy Fresh Off The Boat. The series, for its third season, shot some scenes in Taiwan and the actor admitted that there was fear that he will be kidnapped. Apparently, he was warned not to go to Asia after the movie came out. Watch the full interview below.
