When “The Last Ship” premiered in the summer, it became the biggest debut of a new drama series on cable television. Earning 5.6 million in the ratings on a Sunday timeslot, it surprised a lot of people. But TNT’s decision to give the show a second season renewal was a no-brainer. As its cast and crew prepare for its return, slated in the summer once again, the show has added new cast members to join lead stars Eric Dane and Rhona Mitra. Read on for more about this news item.

In a report published on Deadline, “The Last Ship” has enlisted actors Mark Moses, Brian F. O’Byrne and Nick Court aboard its second season. Moses, who has been seen in shows like “Desperate Housewives,” “Mad Men” and the current season of “Homeland,” will play the role of a U.S. government official concerned about the prevention of the spreading of the plague that has crippled the world. O’Bryne, who worked on “Mildred Pierce,” has been cast in the role of Sean, while Court, who was part of the movie “300: Rise of the Empire,” will play Ned. Sean and Ned are British brothers whose plans will affect the USS Nathan James’ mission.

At the end of the first season, the crew of the USS Nathan James. It is commandeered by Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) has returned to the United States carrying a virus cure devised by Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra). While Chandler has been reunited with his family, he has also discovered a secret far worse than the plague, which should be part of the story development in the second season. But with the addition of the three new cast members, the story of “The Last Ship” will apparently also address a new direction, with the stakes greater and the missions bigger.

“We're also going to see what the world looks like and what these guys have to do with this new reality. It's a world-building thing," said Stephen Kane, one of the show’s producers, about what’s coming next. He related this during the Comic Con event back in July. He also added that the new season will chart a “whole new set of problems and adventure” for Chandler and his team. The producers also said that tension aboard the naval ship will be reduced as the men have already established trust and confidence in Chandler as their leader.

Based on a novel written by William Brinkley, “The Last Ship” is about a Navy destroyer whose crew has evaded becoming victims of a plague that has already infected the world’s population. The show is from Michael Bay, under his Platinum Dunes production. The series also has Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, Hank Steinberg, Jack Bender and Steve Kane as executive producers.
