“The Last Ship” Season 2 Episode 5 “Achilles” aired on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at 10:00 p.m. on TNT. In this episode, the entire crew of the USS Nathan James played a quiet and dangerous game of cat and mouse with the submarine of the mercenaries that they had encountered on the USNS Solace. Meanwhile, Executive Officer Mike Slattery (Adam Baldwin) interrogated their new prisoner, only to discover a shocking revelation that had the potential to make or break their efforts to combat the plague. Read on to learn more about this episode.
On board the submarine from where the mercenaries who had boarded the USNS Solace had come from, Niels Sorrensen (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) was introduced to its captain, Sean Ramsey (Brian F. O’Byrne). He informed Niels that he and his brother, Ned Ramsey (Nick Court) had been on the submarine when the plague had started and had survived due to the fact that they were immune. It led them to recruit others who were immune as well. He then told Niels that the plague had been no accident. He also told his brother not to harm Niels, who was now their guest. Later, Niels told them that the USS Nathan James had Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) on board. He told them that Commander Thomas “Tom” Chandler (Eric Dane) was someone to be careful of, especially as he had managed to sink a Russian vessel, and had defeated a celebrated Russian admiral.
Back on the USS Nathan James, Ensign Will Mason (Chris Sheffield), who was tracking the submarine via sonar. The ship’s navigator, Lieutenant John “Gator” Mejia (Michael Curran-Dorsano) told Chandler that they couldn’t seem to find the submarine as of yet.
Executive Officer Mike Slattery (Adam Baldwin) then talked to their prisoner, Juan Carlos (Carlos Leal), who exchanged information for water. He told them that his captain was crazy, that it was the captain’s brother who had gone crazy and had fired on them on the Solace, and that the submarine was an Astute Class submarine.
Afterwards, Mason discovered an object that was too quiet to be a submarine. Upon realizing that the submarine may have been retrofitted to become an Achilles Class submarine, which allowed them to run quietly. At the same time, the submarine detected the presence of the Nathan James and armed their torpedoes.
Mason and Gator managed to get a bearing, and discovered that they were going to collide soon. Chandler then confirmed that the submarine was following them after they followed the Nathan James after Chandler had the ship turn a little. However, neither vessel fired, which according to Juan Carlos was a tactic of Sean’s so that he could be sure to hit them hard.
Afterwards, the entire ship went on “Quiet II” mode, which meant that everyone below deck had to be absolutely still and silent so that they wouldn’t be noticed by the submarine. Chandler’s plan was to slowly and quietly go around the bank of an upcoming shoal. This worked as they disappeared on the submarine’s sonar. However, Sean correctly guessed that they would go towards the shoal and headed there.
Meanwhile, Juan Carlos, who was at the deck, was revealed to be working with the men in the submarine. He began rejecting an object, which they believed to be a beacon, inside his body. This led to Doc Rios (Maximiliano Hernandez) and Dr. Rachel Scott operating on him to get the object out.
Meanwhile, Chandler sent a helicopter with torpedoes out and maneuvered the ship to make it seem, on sonar, that they were dolphins. Afterwards, the submarine “went active” and began to fire torpedoes at them. Chandler then had their own torpedoes launched. He told the helmsman to circle back, and to angle the ship slightly different from before. It allowed them to narrowly escape being hit by the torpedoes. However, they lost track of the submarine, which had dove and began scraping the walls of an underwater canyon.
Slattery then went to Chandler with the flash drive they had found inside Juan Carlos who had just passed away. Upon decrypting it, they discovered the location of the other safe laboratories. However, the submarine, thanks to a document that Niels had seen regarding Dr. Julius Hunter, released twenty-six missiles in order to bomb the laboratories. The Nathan James just managed to hit two of them and received no word if the staff of those places had survived.
Rachel, after learning that Juan Carlos had told them before passing out, that they, people like him, had taken Europe. He told Chandler that one to five percent of the world was actually immune to the virus, and these immunes were now trying to seize the cure and the laboratories in order to destroy it.
Back on the submarine, Sean told his brother and Niels that it was time to conquer America.
