The Last Ship” Season 1 Episode 5 “El Toro” aired on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on TNT. The crew’s latest mission brought them to Nicaragua to hunt monkeys for Dr. Scott’s research, only to encounter hostiles and an evil leader who had been taking advantage of a small group of people. Find out what happened to this episode with our recap below.

In order to help Dr. Scott (Rhona Mitra) with her research, the crew of USS Nathan James headed to Nicaragua thought that this would be a safer option than Costa Rica. The group assigned to this mission would have to use rafts to get to the inner part of the island, which meant that they would be off radar for the time being. Should there be any danger, they would communicate with the ship by using flares.

When they got to the coast, Commander Chandler (Eric Dane) and his crew encountered a group of people who had been infected by the virus. They were pleading for help. Some were even saying “El Toro, El Toro.” But with heavy hearts, the navy crew knew they could not do anything as this would be too risky for those who were not infected. Chandler ordered half the men to return to the ship, including Dr. Scott, so that they were out of danger.

With some five men left, Chandler moved further up the coast to continue to hunt for monkeys, but instead spotted an abandoned boat labeled “El Toro.” But just as they were getting closer, their group was ambushed by armed men and they were brought to the leader.

El Toro (Jose Zuniga) was the name the group leader chose to call himself.  A former drug runner, he set the rules that made slaves out of those who remained in the island and banished those who have been infected. He had the mayor of the tiny community under the palm of his hands. He took advantage of the young women in the group, including the mayor’s daughter, in exchange for food and a safe place to stay. While El Toro lived in luxury, the rest of the group were in tents, with barely ideal living situations. But El Toro reasoned they were protected here.

Despite knowing that this was wrong, Chandler and his men first did not want to get involved. They were only there for the monkeys, which El Toro had control over too. He wanted the weapons the navy crew had with them in exchange for the monkeys.

Mike (Adam Baldwin) was beyond upset about how evil El Toro was, but Chandler still didn’t want to get involved, if only to prevent from losing any more men and innocent people. Mike did not want to go back to the ship; not until they dealt with El Toro. With a rousing speech, he managed to fire up Chandler’s convictions. They were going to make things right and bring down El Toro’s tyranny. This was a ballsy move for Chandler and his men, and perhaps the most action-packed ten minutes of the season yet. The men from USS Nathan James succeeded in beating the evil guys, despite many others dying in a senseless battle.

Back at the ship, the crew rejoiced when they saw flares from within the depths of the island. This meant that Chandler and his men succeeded with their mission. While all these was going on, Tex (John Pyper-Ferguson) and Dr. Scott had been getting along well. They encountered Tex from Season 1 Episode 2 “Welcome to Gitmo,” and he has never left the crew since. It’s pretty obvious that Tex was interested in Dr. Scott, and they seem to click. Will this develop into something more?

And that’s it for the recap of “The Last Ship” Season 1 Episode 5 “El Toro,” which aired on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on TNT. How much did you enjoy this episode?
