Meanwhile, it was shown how Niels (Ebon Moss-Barcrach), the scientist who had added his gene to the virus, had managed to locate a group of survivors who called themselves the “chosen ones”. Read on to learn more about this episode.
The episode began in Biscayne Bay in Florida, thirteen days before present. A man named Niels (Ebon Moss-Barcrach) is the scientist who added his human gene into the virus and played with a boy. Days later, as everyone got sick, Niels moved on.
Meanwhile, at present, Commander Tom Chandler (Eric Dane), Lt. Carlton Burk (Jocko Sims) and Lt. Danny Green (Travis Van Winkle), went to the White House. It had been infected, and got everything they could, including an encrypted USB drive. When played, it contained a message from the Secretary of the Navy with codes embedded regarding several facilities and laboratories that might still be safe.
After calling around, they discovered that four of the laboratories were working in the United States, and two other laboratories were safe in Europe. Lt. Kara Foster (Marissa Neitling) was then promoted to become the commanding officer in the Combat Information Center. Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) managed to reach her old mentor in Yale, who was currently holed up in a facility in Florida.
Before arriving at Norfolk, Rachel discovered that Tex Nolan (John Pyper-Ferguson) had gone off in search of his fourteen-year-old daughter. As she lived in Jackson, Rachel assured him that they were going to get there soon enough.
Before arriving at Norfolk, the crew was briefed, and a call was put out for pilots. They were greeted by a Navy SEAL (Damon Dayoub) and several pilots, who each took boxes of the cure, and scientists and doctors who could recreate and spread the cure, to Europe and across the United States.
As the crew left, Lt. Junior Grade Alisha Granderson (Christina Elmore) told Master Chief Hugh Jeter (Charles Parnell) that she feels guilty and can’t face the crew because of what her mother did, but he told her that no one blamed her.
On land, Kara and Danny went to Kara’s mother’s house. They discovered a letter saying that she had gone to stay at a nearby bowling alley, which was a safe zone. There, they were reunited, and Kara discovered that her mother had changed a lot. Before leaving, Petty Officer Third Class O’Connor (Paul James) managed to turn on the electricity. Kara’s mother revealed to her that she knew that her daughter was pregnant.
Back on the ship, as the crew celebrated the planes landing at their respective places, Rachel discovered that her boyfriend might have already perished. He had been in China covering the story during the outbreak.
Others weren’t so lucky, like Chief Engineer Andrea Garnett (Fay Masterson), who was later comforted by Chandler, as her family had perished. Others, like Executive Officer Mike Slattery (Adam Baldwin), had no way of knowing whether their families were alive or not. Soon, Chandler received reports of several of the crew requesting to stay behind, but others, like Kara, decided to continue on with the Nathan James. Chandler also struggled with the decision of staying behind with his family or not, as they had managed to return home. However, in the end, he decided to continue on with the mission, as did Slattery, who left a letter, a pack, and some vials of the cure in his house for his family, just in case.
Back on the ship, Chandler promoted Alisha to full lieutenant. He watched as the Navy SEAL escorted Kelly (Alice Coulthard) and Ava Tophet (Jade Pettyjohn) to their new home in a house beside his own.
Meanwhile, Niels, who had arrived in Port St. Lucie several days prior to the present, was taken in by a group of survivors who called themselves the chosen ones. They told them that the news of a ship with a cure wasn’t a rumor, and wondered what they were going to do about it.
