The Last Ship” Season 1 Episode 7 “SOS” aired on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on TNT. The crew heard a distress call on the radio and they sent out a team to save her. Dr. Scott was hoping she could help with her virus cure research. The mission ended with serious consequences. Find out what happened in the recap below.

Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) told Commander Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) that she discovered something peculiar about the virus strain. It had a human gene, and it made her wonder why it was there. She also told Chandler that they were down to two monkeys to use for the experiments. They were supposed to hunt down for more monkeys for her research work, but the crew heard a distress call from someone named Patrice, who was trapped in a boat somewhere off the coast of Jamaica.

Dr. Scott became interested in her because she’s the only survivor of the said boat. Some fifty of them have died already. How did she survive then? Could she be the answer to her experiment? The crew then headed out to their latest mission: extract Patrice and bring her to the USS Nathan James. But in order to do that, they would have to find out her exact coordinates.

Chandler talked to Patrice on the radio and as a safety measure,  since the radio is open to anyone on air, he introduced himself as a fisherman. She gave him her coordinates, and then the crew prepared for their search and rescue.

Somewhere, the Russians, whom they encountered in the episode “Dead Reckoning,” picked up the conversation between Chandler and Patrice. Even as the captain said he was a fisherman, they knew that this was the Americans, and thus, planned on an ambush.

So as the Russian boats arrived to where Patrice was, the team prepared for battle. While they were successful in extracting Patrice and bringing her safely back to the ship, as well as killed many Russians during their defense, Chandler and Tex (John Pyper-Ferguson), who were on the same boat together, were left behind. Drifting at sea, the crew wondered if the two were still alive. This time, they had to search and rescue Chandler and Tex.

Chandler, however, knew that the Russians were on to them, so in an effort to keep his crew safe, he sent a radio message to them saying that they should cease and desist any search and rescue activity. Tex was pissed, but Chandler reasoned that if the Russians found them, and then found USS Nathan James, they would all be dead. He could not risk that.

The crew was stunned at their commander’s orders. Did Chandler mean that or was it some kind of a code? XO Slattery (Adam Baldwin), despite Chandler’s orders, still conducted a search for them anyway.

At the lab, Dr. Scott’s test with Patrice bore good news. She’s immune to the virus, to every strain of it. So that meant that it’s possible there could be others like her too. Humanity has a chance to outlive this epidemic. This was a breakthrough in her research!

While in the water, Chandler and Tex bonded like men and talked about their families and how they got to where they were. Tex admitted that the reason he went along on this mission was so that he could impress Dr. Scott. This elicited laughter from Chandler. Even as they are in the brink of death, the two found ways to amuse themselves.

Just then, a helicopter appeared in the sky. Was it Slattery ordering the crew to rescue them? Chandler was kind of miff that his XO disobeyed orders. But the truth was, viewers were fooled too because as it was revealed in the end that the helicopter was, in fact, from the Russians. Chandler and Tex have been captured.
