The Last Ship” Season 1 Episode 2 “Welcome to Gitmo” aired on Sunday, June 30, 2014, at 9:00 p.m. on TNT. Running low on provisions, the crew of USS Nathan James headed by Commander Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) arrived to Guantanamo Bay, hoping to find food, medicine and other supplies. Their brief visit was met by hostiles. Read on to learn more about what happened in this episode.

“Welcome to Gitmo” opened to reveal that it was actually Dr. Quincy Tophet (Sam Spruell) who was talking to the Russian operatives on the satellite phone. Tophet, who was working with Dr. Rachel Scott (Rhona Mitra) for the virus cure, was keeping the Russians up-to-date on where USS Nathan James was headed. The Russians wanted to get the virus cure for themselves, with Tophet as their inside man.

On the ship, the crew of the USS Nathan James held a short memorial for their friends and family, whom they believed had already perished from the virus. Some of them, including XO Mike Slattery (Adam Baldwin), expressed their distrust for Dr. Scott to the Chandler, pointing out that Scott knew that their families were in jeopardy a few weeks before the virus threat. She could have at least given them time to say goodbye. Dr. Scott reasoned that she had orders from the Pentagon, so she couldn’t tell the crew about the virus. One of the men said that they were familiar with “orders” being servicemen.

Their latest mission in this episode was to head to a military facility in Guantanamo Bay (Gitmo) to gather supplies. To prepare the men, Dr. Scott briefed them on the nature of the virus:  1) it can affect some animals except dogs, but they could not transmit it; 2) it was airborne and a human who was infected can transmit it by simply breathing; 3) and it had mutated and altered. Scott also explained to them the symptoms and the incubation period, should anyone become infected. They were told to wear masks.

Arriving at Gitmo, the men saw that the place was quiet and deserted, indicating that the virus took out most of the inhabitants of the island. The men split into three teams, with one team working on a tight time frame because the protective masks they were wearing can only last for an hour.  To make matters worse, Chandler’s team encountered a vigilante named Tex (John Pyper-Ferguson) who told the servicemen that they were not infected, but there was a militia group led by Al Qaeda detainees who were taking control of the island.

A series of action-packed moments took place when this group took Tex as a hostage, but Chandler’s team saved him from the terrorists and even managed to get information from Amir of the Al Qaeda. They lost some men in this encounter, proving that even at times like this, the war on terror always ends up with casualties.

Scott, meanwhile, also contributed to the retrieval and rescue and somehow proved herself to the crew.

With the crew, including Tex, safely back to the ship, Chandler received a message that a British ship was nearby. Initially confirming they were friendlies, Chandler invited them to partake in their loot and perhaps forge an allegiance. But when one of Chandler’s men checked further, the ship was, in fact, Russian. When Chandler, who still doesn’t know that Tophet was working with the Russians, tried to contact them, he was able to get hold of the captain of the Russian’s ship, who strongly stated that they want something they have on Chandler’s ship.
